Barbie sparked an international controversy last week with the film getting banned in Vietnam due to a politically ‘yikes’ map appearing on screen. This week the movie has once again made headlines but for a much more positive reason – the critics are loving it.
Barbie has once again managed to turn a lot of heads, but it’s not because of her bright pink outfit. First reactions to the film are now out on social media and most critics have extremely positive impressions of the Greta Gerwig movie. The Margot Robbie-led flick is looking more like a bonafide blockbuster.
The film has been one of the most talked about summer blockbusters ahead of its July 21 debut. Many have been pitting Barbie against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a rivalry fans have dubbed Barbenheimer. Based on the early reactions, Barbie may give Oppenheimer a worthy challenge this summer.
I can’t officially quit Twitter before telling you all that Barbie is currently my favorite film of the year,” Comicbook’s Jamie Jirak said. Greta Gerwig somehow exceeded my expectations. She tackles the positives and negatives of Barbie so beautifully. Give Ryan Gosling an Oscar nomination, I’m dead serious!

Critics have praised director Greta Gerwig’s take on Barbie calling it though provoking and magical. The first reactions also commended stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s performance in the movie, saying that they deserve Oscar nominations for their roles.

What a great time for cinema.#Barbenheimer is almost upon us. Support both movies & incredible artists like Greta Gerwig & Christopher Nolan. We are all winning this summer. 2 in the pink, 1 in the stink. This is why movies are made!#Barbie #Oppenheimer#BarbieTheAlbum #Magic pic.twitter.com/BqZB0acdfM

Screen Rant’s Joseph Deckelmeier was surprised by the movie and gave props to Marvel star Simu Liu in the film. “Margot Robbie’s performance is great & Ryan Gosling & Simu Liu are pure entertainment! The whole cast is brilliant!” Deckelmeier tweeted.
#Barbie caught me off guard & I mean that in the best way possible. It’s funny, bombastic, & very smart. Greta Gerwig aims for the fences & hits a home-run. Margot Robbie’s performance is great & @RyanGosling & @SimuLiu are pure entertainment! The whole cast is brilliant! pic.twitter.com/oXH965aUIF

This Week Media’s Eze Baum commended the “pitch-perfect script backed by great performances” and once again applauded Gosling’s performance in the movie, which is a returning theme of these reactions – in stark contrast to some over-exaggerated drama ahead of release regarding bad-faith posters calling Gosling too old for the role.
#Barbie is a triumph. A pitch-perfect script backed by great performances — particularly from Ryan Gosling — turns what could be a simple studio comedy into a sharp commentary on our society that makes its nuance palatable for those that may not take it at face value. Greta Gerwig previously shared that Ryan Gosling was her only choice for the role of Ken and it looks like the director made the right call. “It was only ever Ryan Gosling,” Gerwig said. “Margot and I wouldn’t take no for an answer.”
Gosling previously joked about Ken being the role that he was been waiting for his entire career. “This has been coming my whole life,” Gosling said to Variety last year. “I think a lot of Kens will feel seen when they see this. Gotta do it for the Kens of the world. Nobody plays with Kens!”
Perhaps Tom Cruise was right when he said that he will be watching Oppenheimer on Friday and Barbie on Saturday. Will you be watching Barbie when it premieres? Let us know in the comments below.
