Barbie exploded into theaters last month, and nobody can stop talking about it. The film, alongside Oppenheimer, took the world by storm and combined for the fourth-biggest opening weekend in domestic box office history. Even though it's been almost a month since its release, it does not show any sign of slowing down, breaking new records as time goes on.

The film has already crossed the $1 billion mark and is only the second film of the year, alongside The Super Mario Bros. Movie, to achieve that feat. As Hollywood produced 'flopbuster' after flopbuster, Barbie achieving such stunning success is amplified even further.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barbie has now added a few more feathers to its cap. At the moment, the film has grossed over $1.19 billion at the global box office. Because of this, it is now the highest-grossing live-action film with a woman at the helm.

To achieve this feat, Barbie beat the Marvel Studios movie Captain Marvel, which grossed $1.13 billion during its theatrical run in 2019. Captain Marvel's claim to the record was tenuous at best since a woman and a man – Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck – directed it.
