Avatar: The Way of Water has some lofty goals to reach. The film needs to be among the top five highest-grossing films of all time just to break even. Although it's still far off from its goal of $2 billion, the movie is at least halfway there.
Avatar: The Way of Water just reach a staggering $1 billion in ticket sales in just fourteen days after the movie premiered in theaters. The film premiered on December 16 in the US, with international screenings happening two days earlier.
The movie achieved this milestone despite earning below the estimated ticket sales for its opening weekend. The second weekend of the movie showed that the James Cameron flick had massive staying power and is set to have a long theatrical run.
Avatar 2 is only the third film to surpass the $1 billion mark after Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion. The Top Gun sequel starring Tom Cruise took 31 days to reach the milestone. On the other hand, the third Jurassic World film headlined by Chris Pratt took a little over four months to breach the $1 billion mark.
