In November 2022, James Cameron shocked the movie industry by claiming that Avatar 2 needed to "be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history" just to break even. While few doubted that the director could achieve it, the target was still a daunting task even for Cameron. Now, the film isn't just en route to breaking even - it's set to make Disney a ton of profit.

Avatar: The Way of Water recently became last year's highest-grossing film. The sequel has already earned over $1.5 billion at the box office to surpass Top Gun: Maverick. With its massive haul, Cameron is confident that the movie will reach its break-even target in a few days.

"It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we'll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can't wiggle out of this and I'm gonna have to do these other sequels," Cameron shared. "I know what I'm going to be doing the next six or seven years."

"The point is we're going to be okay," the director adds. I'm sure that we'll have a discussion soon with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for 'Avatar 3,' which is already in the can – we've already captured and photographed the whole film, so we're in extended post-production to do all that CG magic." Avatar 3 was filmed simultaneously with Avatar: The Way of Water.
