Anne Hathaway addresses fans’ response to The Princess Diaries 3

Unfortunately, Andrews does not share Hathaway's optimism. In December 2022, the 87-year-old actress told Access Hollywood that the planned installment probably won't happen. She recalled that another installment has been discussed for years and pointed to her and Hathaway's age as reasons why it is probably too late to happen now. Earlier that year, she had told The Hollywood Reporter much the same thing stating, "I think it would be too late to do it now. There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. But I don't think it ever came to pass. And Garry then did leave us. [The series director.] [For] especially me, it's too far down the line now to go back to it."

The Princess Diaries is a duo of films, based on Meg Cabot's novel series of the same name, released in 2001 and 2004. The first film starred Hathaway as a teenage girl named Mia who meets her grandmother for the first time and learns that she is the heir to the European kingdom of Genovia. The teenage girl must then choose between having a normal life or becoming a princess and the future ruler of Genovia. In the sequel titled The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Mia navigates an old Genovian law that requires her to be married or forfeit her claim to the throne.

Despite Hathaway's interest, there is currently no confirmation that she will reprise her role. Nevertheless, the film will see Debra Martin Chase reprise her role as producer with Aadrita Mukerji attached to write the script. Mukerji's portfolio includes Supergirl, Reacher, and Scorpion, among others.

Apart from Hathaway and Andrews, the film also starred Héctor Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall, and Robert Schwartzman. The sequel saw Hathaway, Andrews, Elizondo, Matarazzo, and Goodall reprise their roles from the first film with the addition of John Rhys-Davies, Chris Pine, and Andrew Jacoby.

By the way, The Princess Diaries gave Hathaway her breakthrough role. The sequel, released in 2004, also kickstarted actor Chris Pine's career as it was his first film role.

While it's unfortunate that Princess Diaries III might not happen, a threequel to a classic 2000s film, Freaky Friday, which stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, is close to being a reality after both stars voiced their interest in reprising their iconic roles.
