In what might be the most unexpected career move since… well, ever, Adam Sandler has taken on the role of a 74-year-old lizard (come on, we all know lizards don’t live that long!) named Leo in Netflix’s upcoming animated musical comedy, Leo.
Now, before you start imagining a geriatric lizard with Sandler’s voice, let us paint the picture for you. Leo, the class pet, has been living the same old life for decades in a Florida elementary school. But after discovering he only has a year left to live (because, you know, he’s 74 in lizard years), he decides it’s time to break free and see the world.
Unfortunately, as with all great plans, something always goes wrong. Instead of enjoying his freedom, he gets tangled up in the lives of his students. The trailer, which recently dropped, showcases Leo’s adventures, from riding vacuum cleaners to getting pedicures.
There’s even a scene where he goes all Godzilla on some LEGO sets. However, it’s not all fun and games. Leo’s journey is also about finding purpose and connecting with the students, especially after they discover he can talk. After all, who wouldn’t want a talking lizard as a friend?
Joining Sandler in this reptilian escapade is comedian Bill Burr, who voices Squirtle, Leo’s turtle buddy. The cast features other big-name actors like Jason Alexander, Kevin James, Stephanie Hsu, and even some members of Sandler’s family.
Directed by the trio Robert Smigel, Robert Marianetti, and David Wachtenheim and produced under Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, Leo’s first impression gives the promise of a rollercoaster of emotions, laughter, and some good old Sandler humor.
The 57-year-old is on a roll in recent years. This year alone, he’s released three Netflix films, including Murder Mystery 2. Unfortunately, his fourth film, Spaceman, which was initially slated for a Netflix debut later this year, got bumped to next year due to the Hollywood strikes.
Leo is set to premiere on Netflix on November 21.
