The Metro series has a huge following among fans of survival horror shooters. The latest release in the franchise is already four years old, and it looks like 4A Games is ready to release the next installment soon. In fact, it’s already playable start to finish.
Metro Exodus was released in February 2019 and went on to sell a tidy six million units. The first-person survival horror shooter was also well-received by critics and gamers thanks to its slower and more methodical pace. Metro Exodus also got a recent re-release for newer consoles.
Luckily, players may be getting a sequel to Metro Exodus really soon. Insider Gaming‘s Tom Henderson reports that the sequel is now in a fully playable state. Henderson also expects that the release of the game is imminent.
According to the report, the title “could be revealed later this year, with a tentative release window of 2024 if Metro Exodus’ reveal and release schedule is anything to go by.” The studio has not confirmed the reports so take this information with a grain of salt.
What we know of the upcoming Metro Exodus sequel
4A Games announced the existence of the next Metro game on its website way back in 2020. “It’s no secret that we have already started work on the next Metro game. Using everything we’ve learned from the last 15 years, we’ve set our sights even higher – the next title is being built for Gen 9 consoles and PC, with a complete overhaul of our engine and renderer to take advantage of the new power, storage, and hardware supported ray tracing afforded by the new consoles.
The details for the upcoming sequel are still scarce at this point, but it has been mentioned that the game starts off with a dream sequence. The Metro Exodus sequel will still follow the same formula as the previous games in the series with stealth, crafting, and looting resources still being part of the core gameplay loop.
4A Games said in 2020 that the team is “committed to delivering a great story-driven single-player experience; this is what the Metro series is founded on. As a studio, we want to constantly push ourselves to create bigger and better games, but we also listen to what the fans are saying, and we know what’s important to you. We take our responsibility to the franchise seriously, and we think you’ll be excited about our plans for the next chapter.”
The untitled sequel for Metro Exodus will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S sometime in 2024.
