When Netflix canceled Warrior Nun last December, there was massive fan outcry. The fans fought back: they generated a viral campaign on Twitter and rented a billboard in front of Netflix’s offices asking the streamer to walk back its decision.
Warrior Nun’s fans’ effort eventually paid off with Simon Barry, the showrunner, announcing that the show will live on as a trilogy. Unfortunately, he won’t be involved in the new iteration to the disappointment of many fans.
Barry dropped the bombshell on his X. In a candid post, he said, “Hey #WarriorNun family, thanks for all your comments/messages/questions etc. FYI – I have no idea what’s being announced tomorrow. I am not a part of the team producing the movies, and have no deal in place for any writing or directing services.”
Hey #WarriorNun family, thanks for all your comments/messages/questions etc.
FYI – I have no idea what’s being announced tomorrow. I am not part of the team producing the movies, and have no deal in place for any writing or directing services. I am 👀 with you. pic.twitter.com/L0kqmlXDb1— Simon Barry (@SimonDavisBarry) October 4, 2023
There is more, though. Amy Berg, the consulting producer and a key writer for the series, quoted Barry’s post, declaring, “I’m also not involved. #WarriorNun.”
Adding to the shockwave, writer-producer David Hayter chimed in, confirming his non-participation with a succinct tweet that mirrored Barry’s: “Same here, for the Nunly record.”
This series of revelations implies that the trilogy will be forging ahead with a fresh crew, leaving the original team on the sidelines. The manner in which Barry, Berg, and Hayter announced they are not involved in the production gives us the impression they are trying to distance themselves from the trilogy.
We think – and we are just speculating here – that the trio are not comfortable with the direction Netflix has in mind for the trilogy and could not come to an agreement on how to resolve their differences. Consequently, they decided to leave.

If that’s the case, their announcements sound like an attempt to distance themselves from a project they do not believe in than anything else.
Or maybe it’s an elaborate ruse to stoke excitement and chatter within the fan base. While we think that is a bit over the top, we prefer it to the alternative and would be more than willing to forgive them. Considering Barry’s efforts to bring the show back after its heartbreaking cancellation, his sudden departure comes as a shock.
In spite of the tremendous support garnered by the Warrior Nun movie series in recent times, the recent developments have cast a shadow over its future. For the sake of the fans, we hope the team in charge can find a way to steer the ship in the right direction, whether by bringing in a crew as equally talented as the one they’ve lost or resolving their differences.
At the moment, Netflix hasn’t said anything on the issue. When that changes, you can be sure we will tell you about it.
