Atypical of a live-action adaptation of a popular video game series, the Gran Turismo movie is a coming-of-age film spliced with high-octane races.
Sony Pictures Entertainment released the first trailer for Gran Turismo and it shares what the movie is all about. The nearly three-minute-long trailer does a good job of summing up the plot of the movie.
The trailer gives fans a first look at the upcoming movie featuring Archie Madekwe as teenage gamer turned racing driver Jann Mardenborough. The video starts with Jann as an average gamer living at home with his parents Steve (Dijon Hounsou) and Lesley (Geri Halliwell). Like most gamers, Jann gets told off for spending a lot of time playing video games with friends.
The Gran Turismo movie is a coming-of-age film about teenage gamer Jann Mardenborough, who turns his passion for the racing simulation game into a real-world career. Directed by Neill Blomkamp, the movie is set to open in theaters on August 11.
Jaan looked for opportunities to turn his passion for the racing simulation game into the real thing. The gamer decided to join the GT Academy competition even though his parents disapproved of his plans. Danny Moore (Orlando Bloom) took notice of the young racer’s talent and referred him to trainer Jack Salter (David Harbour).
Salter proves to be a tough trainer and pushes Jann to the brink. However, he does succeed in turning the gamer into a professional racing car driver as Jann proves doubters wrong by making it to the big league.
The trailer showcases the experience of racing in high-performance vehicles. It also highlights the intensity of racing as a sport. The teaser does a good job of selling the realism in the Gran Turismo video game series and how a gamer honed his skills to the point of turning it into a real-world career.
Gran Turismo is directed by Neill Blomkamp with Jason Hall and Zach Baylin writing the screenplay. Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Doug Belgrad and Dana Brunetti will serve as producers of the movie.

Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions collaborated to produce the movie. It will be distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment.
It will be interesting to see how the live-action adaptation of Gran Turismo fares at the box office. It is certainly a unique take on a popular video game series. The trailer looks good and we hope that the film delivers the same intensity.
Gran Turismo opens in theaters on August 11.
After The Last of Us earlier this year, Gran Turismo is the next Sony adaptation to premiere. It will be followed by another live-action adaptation of a Sony franchise that’s all about cars in Peacock’s Twisted Metal.
