The Star Wars Celebration 2023 had some really big announcements, many of which were positive. But, one of the shows a lot of fans were really looking forward to were notably absent from the festivities and now we know why.
Fans of the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series have been asking for a second season since the show ended last June. Lucasfilm gave an update on the TV show and it’s not something that fans want to hear.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy spoke to Variety about the recently concluded Star Wars Celebration event as well as fielding questions about the projects. When asked about the second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Kennedy confirmed that the series is not in active development at this point.
According to Kennedy, Lucasfilm is focused on the upcoming projects it has at hand. The studio has announced a handful of new TV shows along with three new movies.

“That is not an active development,” Kennedy said of the second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi. “But I never say never, because there’s always the possibility. That show was so well-received and [director] Deborah Chow did such a spectacular job.”
She adds, “Ewan McGregor really wants to do another. Everybody’s all hands on deck with what we’re doing right now, as you can see by what we showed everybody [at the Celebration]. We’ll turn our attention to that again maybe down the road.”
Ewan McGregor reprised his role as the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Disney+ series. In the show, Kenobi goes on a journey to rescue Princess Leia, Anakin’s daughter, after she was kidnapped by the Inquisitor. The kidnapping was a ploy to lure the Jedi Master out of hiding and leads to a confrontation with his former student and now Sith Lord Darth Vader.
Disney has maintained that Obi-Wan Kenobi was a limited series. However, it was an instant hit among Star Wars fans and soon many were asking for a second season. McGregor himself is hopeful that more seasons will be made for the TV show.

Kennedy’s comments, while initially disappointing, still give some hope to fans of Obi-Wan Kenobi. The acknowledgment that the series was well received should be enough for Lucasfilm to consider working on the project in the future.
However, it may be a while before we see a second season in development. Lucasfilm is working on several projects. The biggest announcements made during the Star Wars Celebration are the three upcoming movies.
Fans of Daisy Ridley will see the actor reprise her role as Rey in the upcoming Star Wars: New Jedi Order. Pedro Pascal’s The Mandalorian will also be getting a full-length film that will serve to conclude the popular Disney+ series. Lucasfilm also announced a new movie called Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi which explores the galaxy before the time of the Jedi Order.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is available for streaming on Disney+.
