Remember that episode where Finn and Jake had to endure the Ice King’s tales of their gender-swapped counterparts, Fionna the human and Cake the cat, in Adventure Time? Well, hold on to your hats because here’s the big news: Fionna and Cake are getting their very own spin-off show titled Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake.
San Diego Comic Con attendees got a sneak peek of the upcoming animated show set to debut on HBO’s revamped streaming service, Max. It’s a spin-off to Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time, featuring Fionna the Human, Cake the Cat, and Simon Petrikov (formerly the Ice King with his memories restored) on a multiverse-hopping adventure in which they face off against a fierce new enemy who wants to erase them from existence.
Here’s a short synopsis of the show:
Based on characters from the beloved “Adventure Time” franchise, this brand-new 10-episode series set in the land of Ooo follows the alternate universe versions of Finn & Jake on a multiverse-hopping journey towards self-discovery. When Fionna and her sidekick Cake find themselves in the crosshairs of a powerful new foe, they have no choice but to seek the help of former Ice King Simon Petrikov.
Cartoon Network fans who thought that the famous studio was shutting down will be pleased to know that the show is produced by Cartoon Network Studios, which is now owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. Suzanna Makkos, Max’s EVP, shared the reasoning behind the spin-off show in an interview with Comicbook.com, stating:
The Adventure Time fans have grown up and people are still coming in the bottom, and they’re aging up. [Fionna and Cake] felt like a perfect show for us. Tonally, it is very much Adventure Time, but Fiona’s older. She’s in the workforce. It’s more adult, so I think it’s going to bring in new fans, and it’s also going to serve the fans that we already have.
Adventure Time ran on Cartoon Network from 2010 to 2018. Following its conclusion, a limited series, Adventure Time: Distant Lands, aired on HBO Max from 2020 to 2021.
Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake will premiere on August 31 with ten half-hour episodes.
