Super Bomberman R2 gets a release date on consoles and on the PC

The next and arguably, the biggest Bomberman title, will be headed to consoles as well as the PC sometime later this year.

The Super Bomberman R series has been a great take on a classic series that's been dormant for years.

Konami Entertainment has already confirmed the release date of the next Bomberman installment, Super Bomberman R2, and it will miss the franchise’s 40th anniversary by just two months.

According to Konami, Super Bomberman R2 will be out on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, as well as the Nintendo Switch and the PC, on September 14.

The upcoming Bomberman game is shaping up to be the most action-packed installment yet with several new features like:

  • Castle
  • Battle 64
  • Grand Prix
  • Standard
  • Stage Editor
  • Enhanced Story Mode
  • Online Play
  • Offline Play

The new Castle Mode is particularly interesting. It puts players in 1v15 asymmetrical matches where defenders create maps and defend them with traps to fortify them against attackers whose job is to literally blow past all the defenses placed beforehand en route to securing the treasure chests.

Also interesting is the Battle 64 mode where 64 SBR2 players will bomb their way through each other until the last player is left standing.

Super Bomberman R2 will support crossplay at launch, so it’s guaranteed that you’re going to always have people to play with and against.

We’re just hoping that Konami doesn’t drop the ball and makes too many Bomberman games after Super Bomberman R2.

After a long hiatus, Konami released Super Bomberman R in 2017 to mixed reception. Despite this, the game still sold more than 2 million copies and ended up getting a now-defunct spin-off in Super Bomberman R Online.

Bomberman is just one of the many iconic franchises that Konami has revisited in recent years. The Japanese video game publisher is currently in the middle of ushering in a potential renaissance with the release of multiple Silent Hill projects, starting with a remake of Silent Hill 2. It’s widely speculated that Konami is working on a new Metal Gear project as well as a Castlevania game.
