EVO is the biggest annual event in the fighting game community, and it isn’t just about tournaments -SNK revealed a new Fatal Fury title at EVO 2023. The new game, titled Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, was first teased in last year’s tournament, and has now been confirmed.
The studio gave fans an early preview of the game and revealed the title during the announcement at EVO 2023. While SNK did not give many details about the game or when to expect it to arrive, the trailer did showcase fan-favorite characters Terry Bogard and Rock Howard facing off against each other.
The trailer also revealed some of the locations players will be fighting in when City of the Wolves hits the shelves. Geese Tower, National Park, South Town Airport, Abandoned Dojo, Live House “Old Line,” and Factory are just some of the locations that will be featured in the upcoming fighting game.
Character voices can be heard during the reveal of each location. Fans, including @FGAnniversaries, identified the voices in the trailer could possibly belong to Andy Bogard, Mai Shiranui, B. Jenet, Billy Kane, Marco (possibly Ryo), Hotaru Futaba, Tizoc, and Kain R. Heinlein.
The announcement was made during the grand finals of the King of Fighters 15 tournament at EVO 2023. Fans were very excited at the reveal as it marks the return of the classic SNK fighting series. While many in attendance knew that an upcoming Fatal Fury title was being developed, the reveal was still a big hit among fans of the fighting game series.
The teaser image revealed by SNK at EVO 2022 featured two silhouetted characters that fans believed to be Billy Kane and Kain R. Heinlein. The voice lines could be further confirmation that the two fighters will be part of the upcoming installment.
Fatal Fury started back in 1991 with Fatal Fury: King of Fighters on the Neo Geo. The most recent entry into the series was Garou: Mark of the Wolves which was released in 1999. Many of the original Fatal Fury characters were featured in SNK’s King of Fighters series including Terry, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi.
The King of Fighters series is a spin-off of the original Fatal Fury game. The main difference between the two SNK titles is that Fatal Fury featured round-based one-on-one matches while King of Fighters had 3-on-3 team-based matches. However, most of the movesets and characters are shared by both titles.
SNK has not yet revealed an official release date or platform for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.
