Sonic the Hedgehog’s main bad guy invades the LEGO offices! It looks like there’s going to be a new set of themed packs based on Dr. Eggman is coming soon.

LEGO and SEGA previously teamed up to release the Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone playset. But just like the Super Mario Bros. LEGO playsets, expansions and standalone sets were always part of the product lineup. And just like the aforementioned LEGO Super Mario Bros. packs that released playsets that centered on the game’s villain Bowser and his Koopa troops, Dr. Eggman (aka Robotnik) would soon have his time in the sun.

But apparently, Dr. Eggman wasn’t aware of these LEGO plans and took matters in his own hands.

The video was shared by LEGO and SEGA on their official social media channels, such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.

In it, Dr. Eggman takes over one of the LEGO employees at the Denmark HQ of the famous toy brick company. Jealous of his arch-rival Sonic getting his own LEGO focused playsets, the villainous inventor attempts to convince the LEGO staff to make sets entirely focused on himself and his sinister magnificence. Of course, by the end Dr. Eggman learns LEGO already had sets lined up centered on him, making his nefarious plan pointless.

Mike Pollock reprises his role as the voice actor for Dr. Eggman’s LEGO promotional video. But the funny video doesn’t stop with the Sonic theme by simply having his greatest enemy be in the center of the plot. There are plenty of callbacks and Easter Eggs from Sonic games and lore strewn in the dialogue and with visual cues.

Brainwashing a hapless LEGO employee and piloting him like a mech, Dr. Eggman executes his plot to convince the staff to produce a playset centered on his genius. Except LEGO already had Dr. Eggman playsets lined up. D’oh!

One in particular that only classic SEGA Genesis fans would be familiar with is referring to the LEGO toy bricks as having “lock-on technology. While it seems like a throwaway line, this is actually a reference to the 1994 SEGA Genesis Game Sonic & Knuckles which came with a slot where other SEGA games cartridges could be inserted in. This would specifically work with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3, which allowed Knuckles to be played in these games. Any other SEGA Genesis (or SEGA Mega Drive) game would instead access the Blue Sphere mode, which is a stand-alone collection game using Sonic or Knuckles.

The highlight of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO products is the Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman’s Death Egg Robot playset. As the marketing blurb for the product reads:

Kids team up with Sonic to save the day with this LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman’s Death Egg Robot (76993) toy set for ages 8+. Sonic’s archenemy Dr. Eggman and his minion, Cubot, have captured animals to power up their inventions. Kids can launch Sonic’s speed sphere to defeat Dr. Eggman before exploring the research station to gather intel ready for their next encounter.

The set will come with 6 characters and an assortment of accessories. The accessories include Sonic’s speed sphere and launcher, a ramp, spikes, and a removable capsule that contains Sonic’s animal friends. But the biggest accessory is the giant Death Egg Robot mech, which stands 6 in. (15 cm) high, 5 in. (13 cm) wide and 3.5 in. (9 cm) deep, easily towering over Sonic and Dr. Eggman.

There is also a LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog minifigure keychain to be released on the same date. These LEGO sets can be played with the previous Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO pack.
