2K Sports is releasing a new and free update for its latest golfing sim, PGA Tour 2K23, on April 7, which adds John Cena as part of the game’s playable character roster, among others.
Cena is coming to PGA Tour 2K23 decked out in his usual red, white, and blue color scheme, albeit in appropriate golfing attire. The WWE Superstar will be available to play locally and online alongside other sporting legends like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Stephen Curry.
As part of the latest 2K Sports announcement, PGA Tour 2K23 is going free to play on Xbox platforms from April 6 through 9 and on Steam from April 6 through 10.
It appears that 2K Sports wants to take advantage of the hype surrounding John Cena’s appearance at WrestleMania 39 on April 1-2 and The Masters Tournament. As a bonus, 2K Sports is stymying the return of EA Sports PGA Tour, which launches on April 7.
2K, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, owns the licenses to use the likeness of several known personalities because of its partnerships with the WWE and the NBA, among others. This lets it take creative liberties and bring in familiar faces to PGA Tour 2K23. Then again, Michael Jordan, Steph Curry, and John Cena, are all known for playing golf in their downtime, which helps this crossover make a lot more sense.
John Cena is more involved in the WWE this year due to his lax filming schedule. The 16-time WWE world champ has made a successful jump into the movie industry in recent years. He’s currently a huge part of the DC Universe by James Gunn. He debuted as the Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad two years ago and starred in a TV show of the same name last year, which is confirmed for a second season. Unfortunately, because of the recent shuffling over at DC Studios, Peacemaker Season 2 might be coming out later than expected.
