James Gunn reacts to fans hoping for Rocket’s death

For some reason, most fans believe that Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, would die in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Fans speculate that Rocket will not make it out of Volume 3.

James Gunn has been very active on social media in recent months. The director recently reacted to a fan rooting for the death of original team members.

James Gunn recently shared on Instagram one of his early drawings Guardians of the Galaxy that the marketing team made into a movie poster. The drawing featured Rocket Raccoon writing a bunch of mathematical equations on a blackboard and a fan commented on the post saying that they “hope Rocket dies” in the upcoming movie.

In typical James Gunn fashion, he replies with a wide-eyed emoji, which isn’t saying much but it’s something.

Some believe that this is the director’s way of teasing Rocket’s fate in the third movie.

James Gunn replies with a wide-eyed emoji.

However, in another exchange, a user commented that Rocket doesn’t have to die in the upcoming MCU film, to which Gunn responded by saying, “No one said he was going to die but that’s not how stories work.”

Fans have been concerned about the fate of Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The movie’s marketing material has focused on Bradley Cooper’s character and given that the movie has a somber feeling to it, many can’t help but worry.

Volume 3 will be an emotional farewell

The plot of the movie explores Rocket’s tragic past.

The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has been teasing that the upcoming film would serve as an emotional farewell for the original team. Given that the upcoming film focuses on Rocket’s back story, it seems logical to end it with his demise.

However, it is James Gunn that we are talking about. He may have already anticipated that fans would assume that one or more of the team would bite the dust in the upcoming film. Gunn might avoid such an obvious plot decision given that this is his final MCU movie.

And this is the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even if someone ends up dying, he/she may not stay dead for long. Vin Diesel’s Groot sacrificed himself in the first movie while Gamora was killed by her adoptive father Thanos in Avengers: Infinity Wars. Both made it back to the third movie.

If Gunn decided to kill off one or two characters, our guess is that it would be Peter Quill/Star-Lord or Drax the Destroyer.

James Gunn may avoid obvious plot elements with his final MCU movie.

Several scenes in the past trailers suggest that Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt, ends up dying or, at the very least, gravely injured. However, Pratt has addressed the possibility of his character dying in the film saying that death isn’t permanent in the MCU.

“Even if I do die in this, there’s a way to bring me back,” Pratt said. “So if you’re talking about, like, practically can Peter Quill come back? The answer will always be yes.”

Dave Bautista’s Drax, on the other hand, will not be returning after the third movie. Bautista has openly said that he is done with the character and Marvel. According to the actor, the third movie will be “the perfect exit” for him and Drax.

Guardians of the Galaxy is coming to theaters on May 5.

Guardians fo the Galaxy Vol. 3 will serve as Gunn’s MCU swan song. Afterward, we can expect him to dive headfirst into his DCU projects, starting with Superman: Legacy.
