We’ve got exciting news for enthusiasts of Exploding Kittens. The beloved tabletop card game is gearing up to join a very exclusive roster of board games adapted for television thanks to an upcoming animated series on Netflix. During the recent Geeked Week event, Netflix treated fans to an enticing sneak peek, featuring a minute-long teaser and captivating first-look photos.

The teaser immerses viewers in the animated world of Exploding Kittens, highlighting moments of exhilarating chaos and the timeless conflict between good and evil. The narrative unfolds with God and his adversary, the Devil, at the helm of their respective sides, promising a visually captivating and entertaining animated series.

While not your typical God vs. Satan showdown, the upcoming show features an intriguing twist: God and Satan find themselves trapped in the bodies of cats after both are sacked from their respective jobs. God, portrayed as a cheerful feline with a full beard, stands in contrast to the menacing Devil cat adorned with two horns.

The character named the GodCat showcases a range of emotions in the trailer from being scary and playful to being doting and angry. At one point, the trailer captures GodCat’s pride in his creations ranging from sunsets and cheetahs to Florida, video games, and even whack-a-mole, which he finds intriguing in a rather crude way.

The trailer also depicts GodCat as haughty and temperamental, although he exhibits a good sense of humor through clever quips. The final scene leaves the outcome of his battle with Satan uncertain, as GodCat defiantly flips a paw – or finger – at his adversary in cat form.

The show’s tagline teases, “Tom Ellis is GodCat – he may look like a chunky house cat, but he’s actually God trapped in that body. Premiering only on Netflix, 2024. The eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell reaches epic proportions when both God and the Devil are sent to Earth – in the bodies of chunky house cats.”

Originating from the popular tabletop card game developed by Matthew Inman, Shane Small, and Elan Lee in 2015, Exploding Kittens has evolved into a sensation. In addition to the upcoming adaptation, it has inspired various mobile games, including one released by Netflix earlier this year.

Netflix’s investment in both a show and a free mobile game underscores its confidence in the IP. However, it remains to be seen whether its gamble will pay off and translate into increased subscribers.

Netflix will be banking on the existing fanbase of the game to extend their affection to the adaptation and tune in en masse. The streamer will also be hoping that the show’s quirky and ingenious storyline will attract new fans, enticing them not only to watch the series but also to engage with its gaming offerings.

Tom Ellis, known for his role in Lucifer, lends his voice to GodCat, while Lucy Liu, famous for Charlie’s Angels, voices his nemesis, Satan. The voice cast also includes David Gborie, Mark Proksch, Ally Maki, Sasheer Zamata, and Abraham Lim portraying other characters.

Ahead of the show’s debut on the streamer, fans can watch its upcoming romantic comedy Scott Pilgrim Takes Off slated for release this November. They can also catch another animated film, the billion-dollar Super Mario Bros. Movie, which will arrive on December 3.

Originally slated for a debut this year, Exploding Kittens’ will now arrive on Netflix at an unknown date in 2024.
