After a successful five-year run filled with extensive post-launch support, the creators behind the critically acclaimed Dead Cells, Motion Twin, and their partners at Evil Empire, have announced they will be ending support for the game.

Dead Cells began as an Early Access title in 2017, captivating the players with its challenging gameplay, engaging rogue-like elements, and vibrant pixel art. The game was developed by Motion Twin, a worker cooperative known for its democratic development approach.

Following the game’s release, Evil Empire focused on expanding Dead Cells with new content, which has included notable expansions like the Return to Castlevania DLC.

In a recent update on Steam, Motion Twin revealed that Update 35 for Dead Cells, titled “The End is Near,” will be the final major update for the game on PC and consoles. This follows the release of Update 34, “Clean Cut,” slated for the mobile version. Motion Twin expressed their gratitude towards the Dead Cells community for their support and passion, which fueled the game’s continuous growth and success. Evil Empire, in a similar statement, reflected on their pride in the work contributed to the game, including four DLCs, 18 updates, some epic crossovers, and a mobile release.

With the conclusion of their work on Dead Cells, Evil Empire hinted at shifting their focus to “something shiny and new,” promising exciting projects on the horizon.

While Dead Cells will no longer receive new updates, Motion Twin teased that the franchise is far from over. An animated series, a board game, and more collaborations are in the works, ensuring that the legacy of Dead Cells will continue to thrive in new and innovative ways.

Looking ahead, Motion Twin has already announced their next project, Windblown, unveiled at The Game Awards 2023. Described as a lightning-fast combat roguelite, Windblown is set to capture the same action-packed gameplay and cooperative spirit that fans have come to love from Motion Twin’s titles.

As for Evil Empire, it’s unclear what its plans are going forward but its LinkedIn page states that it’s “building two unannounced titles for major 3rd party IPs.”
