The production of the third Deadpool film is well underway and fans are hyped with anticipation. The revelation that Deadpool 3 will be a multiverse road trip with Hugh Jackman’s version of Wolverine from the X-Men films, fan excitement just grows with every new sneak peek. Just recently, rumors that Deadpool 3 will feature cameos such as Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner returning as Daredevil and Elektra went viral.
But perhaps the biggest hype for the movie is Hugh Jackman finally wearing the classic Wolverine costume after over 2 decades since the actor took on the role.
Ryan Reynolds shared the BTS production photo of Hugh Jackman sporting the familiar yellow and blue costume via his Instagram Stories.
The behind-the-scenes photo sees Reynolds in his own Deadpool attire walking side-by-side with Jackman at a set location with white sands and hills. Jackman’s Wolverine costume is relatively comic-accurate, although it is not sleeveless as is usually the case. It is also lacking the iconic fin mask and hood, although Hugh Jackman will probably be shown wearing it at some point in the film.
Beyond the odd inclusion of sleeves and the mask missing, the design itself is visually similar to the costume Wolverine sported during the Astonishing X-Men period (2004-2008). Written by Joss Whedon and with art by John Cassaday, Astonishing X-Men was a direct continuation from Grant Morrison’s New X-Men. This was a back-to-basics era, with the team of mutant heroes swapping their leather jumpsuits to more traditional superhero uniforms.
In the live action X-Men movies, the team wore generic black leather suits that were all the rage back in the late 1990s to the early 2000s. Although it mostly worked for the other members such as Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Colossus, Rogue, and Iceman, it just looked bland on Wolverine who has one of the most striking and easily recognizable superhero costumes.
The original design of the blue and yellow suit was by John Romita Sr. and appeared in 1974’s The Incredible Hulk Vol 1. No. 181. It would later be tweaked when Wolverine was recruited by Professor X in Giant Size X-Men No. 1. Cover artist Gil Kane mistakenly drew Wolverine’s mask with larger fins that made him look more like Batman, but it became a hit with fans.
The closest the live-action version ever got to the classic Wolverine costume is a deleted scene from The Wolverine (2013). The scene was included as an Easter Egg bonus in the home media release of the film directed by James Mangold.
What do you think of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine costume in Deadpool 3? Would you like to see the other brown and tan costume in the movie?
