Character designer denies involvement in new Spyro 4 game

However, he did not confirm or deny if a new Spyro game is under development, indicating that the franchise might not be over yet.

Sorry, Spyro, it looks like you're going to remain on ice (or is it crystal?) for the foreseeable future.

It feels like it was just yesterday when a tiny purple dragon flew into our CRT TV screens, brought peace into Avalar’s realm, and dove straight into our hearts with the release of Spyro the Dragon for the original PlayStation. Fast forward to today and several new installments, as well as a reboot trilogy, later, and Spyro is nowhere to be found.

The last we heard about Spyro was in 2018 when the Spyro Reignited Trilogy launched hot on the heels of the success of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy just a year earlier.

Unfortunately, while Crash and the rest of the gang has one more remaster (Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled) and two more new entries (Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time and Crash Team Rumble), Spyro’s been turned into a crystal – until now.

According to an interesting post on Reddit, a new entry, Spyro 4: Mystery of the Dragon, will be announced on October 5 ahead of its release in Q4 2024 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC.

Naturally, fans picked up on this, and, why wouldn’t they? Although PlayStation gave up Spyro and Crash in the deal to secure Call of Duty for the PlayStation platform, the new management, Microsoft, isn’t as averse to platformer games as Activision Blizzard. So, there was some sound logic behind the believe that a new Spyro game is indeed in development. Except, the rumor has since been debunked.

While the rumor initially had legs – Toys for Bob should be free to work on a new game now with Crash Team Rumble already out – the individual at the center of it all just pulled the rug on every believer.

We’re just hoping that a reboot isn’t in development because fans have shown over the years how attached they’ve become to the OG Spyro.

Nicholas Kole, a name associated with previous Spyro projects and linked with this rumor, has cleared the air. According to his post on X, he’s not just involved in any Spyro sequel in any way, but if one is indeed in the works, he’d love to lend a hand.

The good news is that this denial doesn’t spell the end for the next entry in the Spyro franchise.

A more hopeful way of looking at things is that Kole didn’t say that a new Spyro game isn’t in development – he’s not just involved in one. Thus, Toys for Bob, as previously leaked, could be working on a new Spyro game. Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing what’s true or not until we get an actual confirmation. So, while this is effectively debunked, it wouldn’t hurt to keep an eye out for a tiny purple dragon with the biggest and bravest heart ever.

Unlike Activision Blizzard, Microsoft is, at least, open to doing platformers.

Speaking of keeping an eye out for October, it’s easily the busiest time of the year for gaming. While the biggest ones are easily Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, both of which are coming out on October 20, there’s a long list of noteworthy releases as well, including Assassin’s Creed Mirage (October 5), Forza Motorsport (October 10), and Alan Wake 2 (October 27), among several others.
