Black Myth: Wukong finally has a release date after being pushed out of its initial release window. The upcoming action RPG title from Game Science is coming to PC and current-gen consoles in August 2024.
The release date was confirmed at this year’s The Game Awards event during a new gameplay trailer showcase. The new teaser highlights a mix of stunning visuals, high-definition cinematics, and smooth gameplay. The video revealed a bunch of new areas and enemies for the upcoming Soulslike title.
The most striking feature of the new trailer aside from the release date is the polished gameplay. The Soulslike combat looks to be a satisfying mix of fast-paced action and challenging dodging mechanics. We expect the game to have a steep learning curve as with most other Soulslike titles.
Fans have been waiting for updates about the title since it was announced that the game would be delayed. In January, Game Science released a bizarre two-minute trailer of a young rabbit trying to install the game on an outdated PC. As the computer falls apart, the rabbit purchases a new gaming rig only to find out that the game will be arriving in 2024. The studio did not reveal the reason why the game was pushed back.
In Black Myth: Wukong, players take control of Sun Wukong aka “the Destined One. The game is based on the classic 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West in which the Monkey King fights against the forces of evil. His primary weapon is a staff that can shrink or extend when needed. In the game, Wukong also has the ability to transform into various creatures including a flying insect and a giant monster.
The game was originally announced in 2020 via a pre-alpha gameplay video and was planned for release in 2023. Black Myth: Wukong was originally developed using Unreal Engine 4 but was later moved to Unreal Engine 5, resulting in better visuals. The upcoming title will be supporting Nvidia DLSS 3 at release.
Black Myth: Wukong remains popular among fans despite the controversy that Game Science faced since the game was revealed. IGN recently reported that the studio has been plagued by claims of sexism. Studio co-founder Yang Qi, wrote a lengthy rant in 2013 about gender stereotypes while another staff member made fetishistic allusions toward a female game character in August 2023 following the release of another trailer. Game Science has not commented on the report made by IGN.
Black Myth: Wukong is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on August 20, 2024.
