Call of Duty: Warzone has taken no time rising to the top of the gaming industry following its launch in March 2020. And, while Activision Blizzard is already preparing to roll out the sequel later this year, it appears that the company isn’t going to give up Warzone just like that.
If we believe the reports, the free-to-play title will get a new name just shortly after Modern Warfare 2 comes out.
Tom Henderson, who is one of the most trusted industry insiders, claims that Activision will rename Warzone to “Warzone: Caldera” on November 28. In addition to this, Henderson adds that Warzone will continue to get support alongside Warzone 2.

If nothing else, Activision Blizzard already mentioned this earlier this year around the same time it revealed Warzone 2. At the time, Activision was adamant that Warzone 2 won’t be replacing the first game. Instead, Warzone and Warzone 2 will coexist with each other going forward. It’s not clear how long this arrangement will go on, but it would explain why your Warzone progress will not carry over to Warzone 2.
Ultimately, we’re curious to find out how Activision will accomplish this. It seems impossible to balance Warzone 2 and Warzone as the two are bound to cannibalize each other. We’ve been proven wrong before. At the very least, Activision deserves the benefit of the doubt; it has several dozen studios under its belt to make this happen.
You can’t blame Activision for holding on to Warzone. The critically acclaimed free-to-play shooter might have a “lower” player count these days but it’s still closer to 100 million. A collaboration with Modern Warfare 2 later this year would solve this problem. But, Warzone 2 is already calling dibs on Infinity Ward’s next entry. Even so, Activision might have something else equally exciting in the cards for Warzone.
Regardless of what happens, we should find out exactly what Activision has planned for Call of Duty on the 15th at the Next event.
