Video game adaptations have been all the rage after the success of The Last of Us and Twisted Metal. It looks like Netflix is setting its sights on another iconic video game for its next project – and its one that’s been the hottest topic in the tavern recently. Baldur’s Gate might be getting the adaptation treatment.
According to a report by Giant Freaking Robot, Netflix is in discussions to acquire the rights to the Baldur’s Gate series. The streaming platform may be looking to secure its next big fantasy project after the departure of Henry Cavill from The Witcher series. This new information will definitely excite long-time fans of the RPG series.
Sources have not revealed if Netflix plans on making a series and/or a movie out of the famous Dungeons and Dragons setting. It would make sense for the streaming giant to take on a live-action series as the RPG franchise spans nine titles and over a century of story. A well-drawn-out TV series would provide content for many years as opposed to movies.

It is possible that Baldur’s Gate will be just a stepping stone into the Forgotten Realms, a setting for the popular tabletop RPG Dungeons & Dragons. There are many other stories within the Forgotten Realms that can be translated into TV shows and movies. Neverwinter Nights, a video game series by Bioware and Obsidian Entertainment, could be a prime target in the future.
Interestingly, Baldur’s Gate won’t be the first live-action project set in the Forgotten Realms. The upcoming live-action adaptation would share the world with the Chris Pine-led Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie. There have been plans for a sequel and a TV series for Honor Among Thieves. A crossover within the world of Dungeons & Dragons would certainly be exciting.
Netflix will potentially gain a huge fan base if it acquires the rights to Baldur’s Gate. However, the streaming giant will have to carefully meet the expectations of the game’s rather dedicated fanbase. Hopefully, Netflix has learned its lessons with The Witcher on how to adapt video games to the small screen.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was just recently released on PC, Mac, and PlayStation. The Game of the Year candidate is also coming to Xbox later this year after having issues with the split-screen functionality on the console. The RPG is one of the best-selling titles to come out this year and saw a record number of players during the first weeks.
