Believe it or not, it has been two years since we last saw a Zack Snyder film. After Army of the Dead, Snyder returns to Netflix with a new epic space opera project that has many excited.
We’re a few months away from the premiere of Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire. The upcoming movie recently received an official MPA rating ahead of its December release. Part One received a PG-13 rating for strong violence and partial nudity.
The MPA film ratings lists Rebel Moon as a PG-13 film “for strong violence, sexual assault, bloody images, language, sexual material and partial nudity.” There were rumors that Netflix wanted a PG-13 version of the movie, presumably to attract more audiences. However, Snyder revealed that the upcoming space epic will have an extended R-rated version for both films alongside the original cut for the streaming platform.

“We just did the first temp mix for the preview of part one, and it’s very exciting,” Snyder shared to Slashfilm in March. It’s a big, huge, space — they probably don’t want me to say this — ‘Star Wars’-y, ‘rebels against the evil empire’ thing over all sorts of different worlds. It’s really fun. There’s going to be two films. I think we’re mixing that from June to February. And there’s also going to be extended R-rated versions of each of the two films, so we’re going to be mixing four different features.”
Rebel Moon was originally conceived by Snyder as a Star Wars film, heavily inspired by Akira Kurosawa. Unfortunately (or fortunately), Lucasfilm passed on the project after the studio was acquired by Disney. Given its origins, Rebel Moon will have that Star Wars feel to the story.
“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

Rebel Moon stars Sofia Boutella as Kora, a rebel who leads warriors across the galaxy against the Imperium. The other notable cast members include Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Anthony Hopkins, and Ed Skrein.
Snyder shared he’s working with Super Evil Megacorp for a co-op action game based on Rebel Moon. The upcoming title will also be coming to Netflix via its Netflix Games platform. The director also revealed that an animated short and graphic novel is in development.
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire premieres on Netflix on December 22.
