Netflix recently announced its film slate for the new year, which includes the upcoming Zack Snyder-directed science fiction epic Rebel Moon. Now, only a few days after the reveal, Netflix producer Ori Marmur has explained why the epic is going to be released as two installments instead of the originally intended single film.

Marmur revealed this in a recent interview with Variety, where he and Kira Goldberg, his co-head at Netflix’s original studio film group, discussed issues pertaining to the streamer and its movie production plans.
The Escape Room producer says it had to split the epic due to the vastness of the Rebel Moon universe. He stated that Snyder’s passion for working on his own IP also contributed to the decision, saying:
Zack came in with so much passion. This is a film that he’s had in mind for decades. As you know, he’s spent so much time working on other people’s IP at other studios. We worked with him on Army of the Dead and we did things that others couldn’t do. We made a film and then a prequel and launched a live experience. With Rebel Moon he wanted to push the envelope again. When we saw how big the world he created was, we thought it would be better served as two pieces versus one film. It’s the kind of story that can continue to grow. He thinks of it as his take on making something like Star Wars.
Both Netflix and Snyder have expressed hope that the two-part film will grow into a huge IP with multiple spinoffs much like Star Wars. Netflix produced the two installments consecutively, which means that it may release the second film soon after the first one. In the meantime, only the first installment's release date has been revealed.
