Last month, Prime Video finally unveiled the trailer for Invincible Season 2, as well as its release date at the San Diego Comic Con. Even though we were expecting the update, we still couldn’t help but be impressed.
Robert Kirkman, Invincible’s creator, sat for an interview with Collider at the convention where he explained the decision to split the upcoming season into two parts, among other things.
Kirkman explained that the decision was partially inspired by the show’s production process. He said, “It’s a little bit of the production process just because ramping things up has taken a lot longer than we thought.”
Kirkman further said they made the decision primarily as a narrative choice.
In his words, “This is something that we’ve done with every season of The Walking Dead, and I think narratively, it’s kind of cool to have that pause to digest what you’ve just experienced. And when you see Episode 4 of Season 2, you may need a break. It’s a big episode. It’s definitely a mid-season finale kind of episode.”
According to Kirkman, the decision is a good one since it will be during the holidays and people will be spoilt for choice on television series. He finished, “Narratively, it’s gonna make things hit a little bit harder. And people will know what I’m talking about when the season launches.”
The comic book writer and television producer is also the brain behind The Walking Dead, one of the most successful television franchises in modern times. As he said, taking a break in the middle of a season has worked very well for that franchise so there is no reason why it shouldn’t work for Invincible, too.
But then, Invincible Season 2 has taken a very long time to arrive and we think it is a bit cruel to split it into two parts given the anticipation. To us, his excuse that people will need time to digest the first part is hogwash. Surely, the show’s fans won’t need a few months to understand the events of the first few episodes, no matter how packed they are.

Despite this disappointing twist to the show, there is some good news. When it debuts this November, Invincible Season 2 will have been almost three years in the making. Fortunately, Kirkman confirmed we won’t have to wait that long for the third season. You can read more about that in our article here.
By the way, we are still waiting for concrete news on the planned Invincible live movie adaptation. Earlier this year, Kirkman confirmed it is still in the works but there has hardly been any update since the project was announced in 2017.
Invincible Season 2 will debut on Prime Video on November 3. The second part will premiere sometime early next year.
