The critics and the loud “minority” of fans might not have loved the post-OG trilogy Star Wars but the global box office tells a different story. All three films still made far more than the first six combined, which is probably why Disney is circling back to do a new trilogy.
As part of its latest Star Wars Celebration in London, Disney, specifically, Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, confirmed that the tenth mainline Star Wars installment is in the works.
According to Kennedy, the post-Episode IX Star Wars film will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey Skywalker (or is it Palpatine?) in a film set many years after the events of Rise of Skywalker. The film is set in a brand new era, the New Jedi Order, where Rey will try to rebuild the titular faction.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who most recently worked on Ms. Marvel, is directing the upcoming feature film.
Star Wars: New Jedi Order is one of the three new upcoming Star Wars projects that Kennedy confirmed at the Star Wars Celebration 2023 in London.
The first one is a film by James Mangold, who directed Logan, about the first Jedi. The second one will see Dave Filoni get a shot at his first live-action feature set between the events of 1983’s Return of the Jedi and 2015’s The Force Awakens.

Prior to the announcement, Disney’s interest in new Star Wars movies tapered off in recent years. Several of its projects have been canceled in the wake of the poor critical and commercial performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, forcing Disney to rethink its original plans. It’s unclear what made Disney change its mind, especially as it seemed like it was all-in on The Mandalorian Universe.
It’s either Disney stumbled on a planet full of gold or Palpatine Jedi mindtrick’d his way back into the big screen.
In any case, we’re looking forward to seeing what Star Wars: New Jedi Order will bring to the table.
In the meantime, Star Wars fans can look forward to playing as Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on April 28. Unfortunately, PC gamers might want to consider upgrading sooner if they want to enjoy the sequel at launch.
