The only thing stopping Warren Spector from developing Epic Mickey 3 is his day job at OtherSide Entertainment.

2024 will see the return of Disney’s most iconic character in the world of gaming in the form of Epic Mickey: Rebrushed. Still, as fans look forward to the remake of this classic, the visionary behind the original title, Warren Spector, has voiced his interest in the potential development of Epic Mickey 3.

Spector, who has guided gamers through the jazzy yet twisted Wasteland in Epic Mickey and its sequel, recently expressed a mix of enthusiasm and resignation regarding the series’ potential continuation.

With Epic Mickey: Rebrushed set for release on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC later this year, Spector shared his thoughts on LinkedIn of all places (thanks Nintendo Everything). This ended up kindling a flame of hope for many fans of the platform series, while also dashing them in one fell swoop.

“I can’t begin to describe how excited I am about the remake,” Spector stated, before quickly dousing any rumors of clandestinely working on a new, third entry, confessing, “I’d love to do Epic Mickey 3, but I have a day job that would make that impossible.”

Spector’s current role as Chief Creative Officer at OtherSide Entertainment, a studio known for its ambitious projects and recent challenges, anchors him away from diving back into the paintbrush adventures of Mickey Mouse. Despite these hurdles, his creative spirit has not been dampened, as he’s hinted at a “high-level idea” for a third installment that remains tantalizingly out of reach.

Epic Mickey was originally developed by Junction Point Studios in 2010 and published by the now-defunct Disney Interactive Studios. While it had its flaws, Epic Mickey did a great job of bringing relevance back to Mickey Mouse’s character and, even more importantly, reviving Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a Disney character that had long been forgotten.

The closure of Junction Point Studios in 2013 left the series in limbo, with dreams of a third game drifting into the realm of ‘what could have been.’ Now that Purple Lamp Studios has been tasked with reviving the dormant franchise, fans will be eager to see if the Vienna-based studio can reignite the charm of the original Epic Mickey.

Ultimately, the remake’s success could very well determine the feasibility of a new installment, and now that we know Spector is all for it, the only thing left is to wait and see.
