Warner Bros. Discovery reveals Final Destination 6 is in development

The horror franchise began in 2000 and has spawned numerous installments, a novel series, and two comic books.

Final Destination 6 is currently in very early stages of development.

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced it has another Final Destination project on the way. The media and entertainment company made this announcement during its panel at the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas.

While this is the first official announcement of Final Destination 6, it isn’t the first time news about the project emerged. In 2019, there were reports that a script was in development. Unfortunately, the project was put on hold in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that broke out soon after.

Warner’s decision to greenlit a sixth installment of Final Destination is understandable given that the franchise has been more successful than not. The last installment debuted in theatres in 2011 and while it received mixed reviews from critics, it was a financial success with a $157 million box office gross against a $40 million production budget.

Given that the film is in the very early stages of development, there is little information available on it. Nevertheless, we know that Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor will pen its script based on a story by Jon Watts, who will also produce. Also, reports surfaced last year that Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, popular for their work on the 2018 science fiction thriller film Freaks, will direct the film.

The Final Destination franchise is a series of horror films that follows different groups of people and their attempts to cheat death. It starts with an individual getting a premonition about how embarking on a certain course of action will result in the death of the group members. Armed with this information, the individual attempts to change the course of events, and the group seemingly survives,m at least temporarily. Eventually, each member of the group dies in a series of bizarre events that follow.

Each Final Destination installment follows a different group, although certain characters appear in multiple installments.

Final Destination’s premise revolves around the idea that death is inescapable.

Final Destination 6 is only the latest Warner Bros. Discovery project in development.

Earlier this month, the studio confirmed it had greenlit a new Harry Potter television series for its streaming arm HBO Max that will unfold over the course of a decade. Although it’s unconfirmed, there are reports that it has a live-action adaptation of the iconic Japanese anime Akira in the works.

By the way, a sixth installment of the Final Destination franchise is not the only newsworthy revelation that Warner Bros. Discovery made at CinemaCon. Among other things, the company also seemingly confirmed it has a Beetlejuice sequel in the works after several decades of anticipation by fans.

Final Destination 6 is currently in pre-production. As a result, there is currently no release date. However, we expect this information to come to light as production progresses.
