Hollywood has been at a standstill for almost five long months because of the combines WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The WGA has finally reached a tentative agreement with the studios and streaming companies, which is great news for both the industry and fans as it means work can soon finally resume on our favorite movies and shows – such as The Office reboot.
According to Matthew Belloni and Jonathan Handel of Puck News, the US version of long-running sitcom The Office is on its way back to our television screens. The writers claim that the show’s creator Greg Daniels is at the forefront of this effort and it will be a reboot.
Puck’s reveal was quite short. It read, “Greg Daniels is set to do a reboot of The Office” and gave no other detail, which is a shame. The Office was one of the best mockumentary sitcoms to ever grace our screens and a one-liner reveal that it could be set for another run is quite unfair, to say the least.
Nevertheless, we’ll take it – especially since there haven’t been many other shows that capture our attention the way The Office did back in its heyday. Unless you live under a rock, we doubt we need to tell you about The Office.
The show, a US adaptation of a BBC series of the same name, has been the source of many internet memes throughout the years. The workplace sitcom first graced our screens in 2005 and instantly became a hit. For the next nine years, it would become a staple of the entertainment industry.
Ten years later, and we are talking about a reboot! This news will have fans of the show everywhere buzzing with excitement and, more importantly, questions. If there’s one thing online fandoms can do best, its rampant speculation.
Will the reboot bring the old gang back or we will see an entirely new cast and characters? Will we see a rehash of the same old plot, or are we in for something new and no less exciting? Will it be set in the same universe and attempt to hold on to vestiges of the original show or will it do away with everything from its past?
Nevertheless, we think reuniting the old cast after almost a decade will be tough to pull off. Even if Daniels manages to accomplish it, there is no guarantee the group will still have the same chemistry they had all those years ago.
If Daniels asked us, we would advise that the reboot features a new cast but with some appearances from members of the old. That way, fans can enjoy a revamped version of their favorite show while maintaining the nostalgia the original created.
So, Office fans, get ready for what might be the comeback of the decade! At the moment, there is little to no information on the show. When and if that changes, we will bring it to your attention.
