As the curtains slowly draw to a close on Netflix’s critically acclaimed series The Crown, fans of the British Royal Family have been left pondering what’s next. The compelling historical drama, which has meticulously chronicled the lives and trials as well as the tribulations of the Windsor family, is set to conclude with a bang, spanning six decades of history. However, the creative figures behind this masterpiece are not quite ready to bid adieu.

In a recent chat with Variety, Peter Morgan, the mastermind behind the series, acknowledged the challenge of creating such a cinematic masterpiece. Though he believes that The Crown has set a high bar for television, he sees it as a dying breed of cinematic storytelling.

These shows are unicorns. I think we should cherish the memory of them, because this is a rare and dying thing.

Despite the impending conclusion of The Crown, Morgan teased the possibility of delving back into royal history, albeit under specific circumstances and perhaps, in a different time period.

“I do have an idea. But first, I need to do some other things. Second, it would need a unique set of circumstances to come together.”

“If I were to go back into ‘The Crown,’ it would definitely be to go back in time.”

Ted Sarandos, a stalwart supporter of Morgan’s vision, expressed unwavering faith in Morgan’s storytelling abilities, stating, “If he believes there are stories to be told there, we definitely would explore it.”

The upcoming sixth season will be split into two parts, with the first focusing on Princess Diana and the second shifting the spotlight back to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles. The portrayal of Diana’s tragic death and its aftermath is expected to be a central theme, a story that will certainly be handled with the utmost care and sensitivity.

However, a recent tabloid leak revealed a scene in which Prince Charles converses with a vision of Diana after her death. As expected, the scene in question has drawn furious reactions from some historians, but Morgan has clarified that this portrayal is not meant to be supernatural but rather a representation of Diana’s lasting impact on those she left behind.

I never imagined it as Diana’s ‘ghost’ in the traditional sense. It was her continuing to live vividly in the minds of those she has left behind. Diana was unique, and I suppose that’s what inspired me to find a unique way of representing her. She deserved special treatment narratively.

Throughout its five-season run, The Crown has received glowing reviews from both audiences and critics alike and amassed a remarkable 69 Emmy Award nominations, securing 21 wins in the process.

Season 6 will cover Diana's demise, the first meeting of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, and the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles.
