Why a single tweet has fans talking about Gears 6

All The Coalition needs to do is stay focused on developing Gears 6 and avoid getting dragged into all the noise surrounding it.

Christmas is a time for family, cheer, and gifts. For Gears of War fans, even the remote possibility of news about the next title is the best gift possible. This might explain why a recent tweet from a developer of The Coalition has created a buzz around Gears 6.

On December 25, Gears of War’s official X account tweeted a Christmas greeting, to which Level Designer Benjamin Huyghe replied, stating, “See you in 2024 👊 #Gearsfam” As expected, this ignited a flurry of questions directed both at him and the Gears X account, with the general gist being if this was a tease of Gears 6.

Developers are known to be cheeky, using posts such as this to get gamers talking. The fact that Huyghe has not taken down the tweet despite the myriad of articles trying to analyze if his tweet was a double entendre might mean it was just an innocent statement.

On the other hand, the tweet might be a hint towards something big in regards to the Gears franchise. Either way, it has fans running around in circles, trying to channel their inner Sherlock Holmes.

Beyond the tweet, Gears 6 has been long overdue for an update ever since we heard news that The Coalition is in the thick of things, working on multiple new projects. The announcement, which came in 2021, stated that the Canadian developer was shifting to Unreal Engine 5, but it did not officially state that a new installment of the Gears franchise was among these projects.

However, following the mass layoffs at Microsoft that affected several of its gaming divisions, including The Coalition, insider Jeff Grubb revealed that The Coalition had canceled at least two of the projects it was working on. Having freed up resources and personnel, The Coalition was rumored to be now all-in on the development of Gears 6.

Earlier this year, Xbox insider Nick Baker disclosed that Gears 6 was further along the development cycle than most people expected. On top of that, he also indicated that The Coalition would be making the semi-open world setting it introduced in Gears 5 more expansive.

Gears 6 will potentially be the first Gears game to use Unreal Engine 5.

Ultimately, all information associated with a new Gears game has not come from official sources, and Gearheads are growing impatient. If there ever was a time to announce a new Gears game, it would be next year.

Given that a recent leak suggested Gears 6 would potentially be released in 2026, announcing the project next year, hopefully with a reveal trailer, would give fans something to look forward to.
