Is this iconic PS1 era superhero game slated for a reboot?

Chad Findley, a former Neversoft lead designer, said he "absolutely would do" a remake of the original Spider-Man game.

In the ever-evolving landscape of the video game industry, remasters and remakes have become the trend du jour. Following the resounding success of Insomniac’s “Marvel’s Spider-Man,” a former developer is now fervently eyeing the prospect of remaking one of the classic Spider-Man games.

Spider-Man is one of Sony’s most popular characters from movies to video games. Most recently, Insomniac’s Spider-Man sequel has garnered a lot of praise from gamers and critics. However, long before Marvel’s Spider-Man was released, Sony already had a best-selling Spider-Man game for the PS1 from NeverSoft. The studio brought Spider-Man to the 3D era and was the blueprint for the open-world titles we see today.

With the progress of gaming technology, one of the developers of the original game expressed interest in remaking Spider-Man for modern-day gamers. In an interview with GamingBible, Neversoft lead designer Chad Findley stated that he would like to have a shot at recreating the original game despite the licensing nightmare the studio would have to go through.

“While I would initially be reticent because of the nightmarish licensing and approval processes that are around these days… I absolutely would do it,” Findley said. “I love Spider-Man. It was such a great, nerdy character with stories that always have positive messages and themes while also still being exciting and fun. Stuff we need these days.”

The Spider-Man video game series is currently doing, well with Insomniac’s Marvel Spider-Man 2. The game has become the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive of all time, Insomniac’s highest-rated title, and one of the most popular video game series on the Sony console. Spider-Man 2 is also being eyed by pundits as a possible contender for Game of the Year at the Game Awards.

Sony has not yet had a remastered Spider-Man game and it is unclear if the company is interested in remaking one of its older games. PlayStation first-party studios did find success in remastering some of its older games like The Last of Us and Unchartered for the newer consoles. God of War is another game series that has found success in its reboot.

It will be interesting to see if Sony does decide to pursue a remake of the original Spider-Man with today’s technology. However, the recent titles from Insomniac do a great job at giving players the best possible Spider-Man experience with its massive open world, interesting story, and awesome visuals.

So, is there a need for a Spider-Man remake? Honestly, there isn’t. But these days, studios do like to leverage on gaming nostalgia. We may see a remake of the original Spider-Man when Sony or Insomniac runs out of ideas for the IP.
