For those who have been eagerly waiting to delve back into the neon light-filled world of Cyberpunk 2077 with its latest expansion, Phantom Liberty, there’s a little hiccup.
If you’re among those who made a purchase combining both Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty on PS5, unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a bit longer.
CD Projekt Red broke this news recently, highlighting that PlayStation 5 players who secured Phantom Liberty alone can now get ahead by pre-loading the game. However, the story isn’t the same for the players who purchased the bundle. A bit more patience is necessary for the said players. Only when the official release time of the DLC arrives will they get a chance to download both the original game and its expansion.

To offer a perspective on what’s in store, the expansion for PS5 players demands an impressive 33GB of space. This is on top of the recent 2.0 update, which itself was 25GB. This means the total download might exceed 100GB. In addition to this, the much-anticipated “pre-order Quadra” might not be readily available for PlayStation users, especially for early birds. This Quadra Sport R-7 “Vigilante” vehicle was an exclusive for those who made a pre-order, available across both PlayStation and Xbox Series X/S.
Phantom Liberty promises a fresh journey into Dog Town, a vast addition to the existing game universe. Here, V and a returning Johnny Silverhand, with the new entrant Solomon Reed (portrayed by the stellar Idris Elba), will lead players into new stories and challenges. Yet, it’s noteworthy that one can’t romantically pursue Mr. Elba’s character, much to the disappointment of some hopefuls.
As the clock ticks closer to the premium expansion’s release, CD Projekt Red issued specific guidance for PS5 players. If you obtained the bundle, you’ll need to claim Phantom Liberty from the PlayStation Store by pressing “download” once it officially releases. This comes with an apology from the developers for the inability to preload.
The current situation illuminates the intricacies of digital game releases and how players respond. While some view this as a minor inconvenience, others might be irked, especially those with slower internet connections who were banking on the preload option. It’s especially pivotal given the hefty size of both the base game and the expansion.
However, not all hope is lost. Some PlayStation users reported that they managed to preload the game before the issue emerged. Thus, it could be possible that a window of preload was open but then got abruptly closed.
For those using the Xbox platform, there doesn’t seem to be any obstacle. The preload option is functioning without a hitch. Unfortunately, PC players don’t seem to have the privilege of preloading this expansion as of now. But, considering the typically faster download speeds on PCs, it might not be a massive setback.
Phantom Liberty is hailed as a culmination of their rigorous effort to rectify the initial challenges faced at launch. Many reviews laud it as a definitive experience, showcasing Cyberpunk 2077 at its pinnacle.
Ultimately, while delays and technical issues are not unprecedented, it’s the game’s content and player experience that often stands the test of time. Phantom Liberty, with its rich content, is poised to be a significant chapter in the Cyberpunk 2077 narrative.
On top of the latest free update for Cyberpunk 2077 and it’s easy to see why fans are optimistic about the sequel.
