In what we can only describe as the ultimate gesture of good will, Sony is offering refunds to players who pre-ordered The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PlayStation 5 provided that they already own a copy of The Last of Us Part 2 on PlayStation 4.
The revelation comes just as The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered becomes available to play on PS5 after its announcement last year. The highly anticipated re-release, which comes over a year after a similar remastered version of the first game, brings several improvements to the 2020 title as well as a new game mode.
In a message sent to a user as shared by @ItzPaulHD_v1 on Twitter, PlayStation stated that it’s now offering full refunds to users who pre-ordered The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, promising that existing owners who will buy The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PS5 will still receive the same pre-order bonuses as everyone else. It’s unclear if this applies to the players who own physical copies of The Last of Us Part 2 and if this offer is available indefinitely.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered’s retail price starts at $49.99, but it’s currently available as a $9.99 upgrade for those with copies of The Last of Us Part 2 on PS4.
PlayStation’s decision to refund pre-orders of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, a controversial launch that comes weeks after the live-action adaptation of the first game set a new industry standard for video game adaptations at the Emmy Awards and Golden Globes. It’s now currently available to play after weeks of anticipation and has, so far, drawn plenty of positive reviews from critics. Its Metacritic score stands at 90, earning it “Universal Acclaim” at the reviews aggregate website, and a “Metacritic Must-Play” badge.
The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is part of Naughty Dog’s now-annual re-release slate that started with 2021’s Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on PS5 (and eventually, PC). Judging from their established pattern, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered should be available to play on PC in due time.
Naughty Dog’s co-founder, Neil Druckmann, is currently working with Craig Mazin, on The Last of Us Season 2 on HBO, which starts filming soon. The show’s expanding cast of characters recently added Kaitlyn Dever as Abby and Isabela Merced as Dina. The Last of Us Season 2 is expected to adapt The Last of Us Part 2 (and, by extension, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered), with the latter parts of the game presumed to be part of Seasons 3 and beyond.
