PlayStation Plus is saying goodbye to some of its top hits this December

Sony's PS Plus service has been criticized in recent months for its lackluster offerings and the departures certainly don't help.

It's safe to say that Sony's multi-tiered subscription service hasn't been as much of a success as expected.

In a disappointing development for PlayStation Plus Extra members, a significant update is set to occur in the service’s game catalog.

As the year comes to a close, PlayStation Plus is removing several key titles from its massive but, admittedly, less-than-stellar collection. The PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers, known for providing subscribers with a broad array of games at no additional cost, will experience this change as a part of Sony’s regular content rotation.

Come January 2024, a total of nine games are scheduled for removal from the PlayStation Plus Extra tier, as shown on the “Last Chance to Play” section. This includes critically acclaimed titles like It Takes Two and Devil May Cry 5, along with several other popular games. It Takes Two, in particular, garnered substantial attention and praise, even clinching the award for the best game at The Game Awards two years ago. The full list of games set to leave the Extra tier in January comprises:

  1. Devil May Cry 5
  2. Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  3. It Takes Two
  4. Jett: The Far Shore
  5. The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories
  6. Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae
  7. Omno
  8. Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire – Ultimate Edition
  9. SnowRunner

Existing subscribers will only have over 30 days to complete the said titles, as PlayStation typically refreshes PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalogs around the middle of each month.

Sony needs to do a better job improving its offerings to encourage customers to keep on subscribing.

Before this impending removal next month, this month will witness the unfortunate the exit of nearly a dozen games from PlayStation’s mid-tier subscription service. This list includes notable titles such as Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The December 19 deadline looms for fans to enjoy these games before their removal from the service. The complete list of games leaving in December 2023 is as follows:

  1. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
  2. Yakuza: Like a Dragon
  3. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
  4. Middle-earth: Shadow of War
  5. Caladrius Blaze
  6. Damascus Gear: Operation Tokyo HD Edition
  7. El Hijo – A Wild West Tale
  8. Foreclosed
  9. Friday the 13th
  10. Legends of Ethernal
  11. The Escapists 2
PS Plus Extra and Premium aren't cost-effective based on the games in its library at the moment.

While the removal of these titles may be disappointing for many, the dynamic nature of both PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium ensures that new and exciting games are consistently added to the roster. Sony’s approach when it comes to its regular roster updates helps keep the service fresh and engaging for subscribing, though it inevitably mean saying goodbye to certain fan favorites titles. Of course, it would help if Sony added quality titles at a more regular pace.

As for what will replace these outgoing titles, Sony is expected to reveal the new PS Plus Extra and Premium lineup for the month in a few days. In the meantime, subscribers can look forward to exploring the free monthly PS Plus games, which includes LEGO 2K Drive, PowerWash Simulator, and Sable.

PlayStation Plus Extra, as part of Sony’s PlayStation Plus membership plans, offers a significant catalog of games from both PS4 and PS5, including Ubisoft+ Classics and game trials. This mid-priced tier, alongside PS Plus Premium, has become a valuable feature for PlayStation users, offering a wide range of gaming experiences as part of the subscription.

Sony needs to find a way to improve the offerings of its more expensive PS Plus tiers.

Speaking of PlayStation, Sony was relatively quiet at this year’s The Game Awards. To make matters worse, its fastest-selling game ever, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, went home with zero awards despite seven nominations.
