The dance with darkness is set to continue as Netflix gears up to bring Joe Goldberg back to the neon-lit, shadowy streets of New York City for one last eerie performance in the world of You. Yes, folks, it’s official: The twisted journey of Penn Badgley’s hauntingly charismatic Joe is preparing for its grand finale in its last, fifth season.
Netflix’s official Instagram account revealed that Season 5 of You is officially in production. The first glimpse into this final chapter sees Badgley’s Joe wandering the empty avenues of New York City, a place filled with memories both tender and blood-soaked. Netflix dropped this behind-the-scenes shot with the caption, “Back to where it all began.”
You, which first aired on Lifetime in 2018, introduced us to Joe, a seemingly benign bookshop clerk. Those innocent beginnings spiraled into a saga that saw our anti-hero sail across the murky waters of love and lunacy, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake.
Each season peeled back layers of Joe’s psyche, revealing a man as complex as he was horrifying. From the streets of Los Angeles to quaint suburbs and, finally, the foggy corners of London, Joe’s journey over the past five years has been anything but dull.
The most recent escapades in London served up an intriguingly dark whodunnit, concealing the twisted underbelly of Joe’s psyche under the guise of academia and high tea. Nevertheless, the thirst for a “normal” life saw Joe forge a path back to New York, his personal hunting ground, with a new flame by his side and a seemingly endless well of manipulations.
With the announcement of fresh faces joining the cast, including the talents of True Blood alumnus Anna Camp, Griffin Matthews, and Madeline Brewer, Season 5 will certainly deliver a cocktail of mystery and deceit. Still, the real question on everyone’s mind is how Netflix plans to conclude Joe’s sordid tale of obsession and desperation.
There’s also the question of what the final season will look like now that showrunner Sera Gamble is no longer involved in the series. Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo have been brought aboard to complete the psychological thriller, and it goes without saying that they’ll be under enormous pressure to end You on a high note.
At the time of writing, a premiere date for You Season 5 is yet to be announced.
