Game of Thrones’ creators drop new trailer for 3 Body Problem at Netflix TUDUM

From dragons and night walkers, Benioff and Weiss' next endeavor, as part of their deal with Netflix, takes them deep into the sci-fi realm.

The 3 Body Problem is a marked departure from the setting of Game of Thrones.

Nearly a decade since overseeing the brutal political landscape of Westeros, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are finally ready to unveil their latest project, the 3-Body Problem.

Similar to Game of Thrones, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling novels, the upcoming TV series is also an adaptation of Cixin Liu’s renowned sci-fi trilogy, The Three-Body Problem.

The latest Netflix TUDUM event treated curious audiences to their first look at the sci-fi epic.

The Three-Body Problem’, originally announced in 2020, has Benioff and Weiss steering the spaceship with the help of Rian Johnson, the director of Glass Onion and Last Jedi, who is part of the team of producers. For the uninitiated, the series, known as Remembrance of Earth’s Past, begins with The Three-Body Problem as the inaugural book.

A blend of history and futuristic enigma, the story unfolds in 1960s China, where a young woman’s decision at the time will reverberate across space and time, impacting a group of brilliant scientists in the present day. As the laws of nature dissolve before their very eyes, these former colleagues reunite to confront an unparalleled threat in human history.

The cast, a convergence of stellar talents, includes Jess Hong, Benedict Wong, Eiza González, Jovan Adepo, Alex Sharp, John Bradley, Saamer Usmani, Liam Cunningham, Rosalind Chao, Jonathan Pryce, Marlo Kelly, Sea Shimooka, Ben Schnetzer, and Zine Tseng.

We can only hope that fans have at least forgiven the Game of Thrones’ creators to give 3 Body Problem a chance next year.

Fans of Benioff and Weiss, despite their mixed feelings towards the Game of Thrones finale, are keen to see how this duo is molding Cixin’s highly celebrated narrative into a visual spectacle. The author’s novels, known for their millennium-spanning scope and meticulous attention to detail, could provide fertile ground for something similarly remarkable, even for those still bearing the scars from the brutal and tragic ending to the decade-long story about the Starks, Lannisters, and Targaryens.

Benioff and Weiss, in a 2020 statement, announced their excitement about the project, saying “Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe.”

The adaptation is expected to premiere in January 2024 and will consist of eight hour-long episodes. In the meantime, new and existing fans alike can immerse themselves in the books, or perhaps even re-watch Game of Thrones to prepare for another potential phenomenon.

The 3 Body Problem was originally scheduled to be out sometime later this year but has since been pushed back to early 2024.

Speaking of Game of Thrones, the “botched” ending to the series hasn’t stopped the public from asking for more and HBO has delivered. House of the Dragon was easily last year’s biggest show, rivaling even the best seasons of Game of Thrones. Work on Season 2 of House of the Dragon is currently underway, and the word has it that HBO could announce the third season soon with a possibility of a fourth or even fifth season happening within the next few years.

Surprisingly enough, House of the Dragon is one of the few shows that remain unaffected by the ongoing WGA strike.
