More than five years after Bird Box had people debating what they’d do if they lived in a world where opening your eyes as well as looking outside is akin to suicide, a spin-off that’s set in another part of the globe is finally coming.
The spin-off, Bird Box Barcelona, which will premiere on Netflix on July 14, features a group of survivors trying to navigate a deadly world.
The trailer begins with one of the survivors carefully trying to scavenge an abandoned home. We’re then taken to a glimpse of the early goings of the entire situation and what led to the current events.
As previously mentioned, the film is a spin-off to the 2018 movie, Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock as a woman trying to survive in a now-barren world. While the new movie is set in the same universe, it takes place across the pond, all the way in Barcelona, and will feature a different group of characters. But, despite the setting change, fans of the original movie will likely want to tune in to see how the rest of the world handled the crisis.
Many have already taken to social media to share their thoughts on the trailer, with some praising the latest preview for its suspenseful tone and others expressing excitement to see the story unfold.
Bird Box set numerous records for Netflix when it came out in 2018. To date, it remains one of the most-watched original Netflix programming with more than 280 million hours watched within the first 28 days of its premiere.
Red Notice and Don’t Look Up has since posted better numbers but it has endured all this time with a firm hold on third place.
It remains to be seen if Bird Box Barcelona can replicate if not exceed the success of the original. But, one thing is for sure – the setting is a stark contrast to the forests and the small towns of the first film. This new backdrop for the film will make it feel drastically different and more unpredictable compared to the first movie, allowing it to separate itself from Bird Box while also drawing upon the strengths that made it so popular in the first place.
Speaking of Netflix, the streaming platform is losing ground in the United States, presumably due to its prohibitive pricing and password-sharing rules. But, it’s not losing a wink at all, as it has pivoted towards other territories, including South Korea.
