No one’s holding their breath on Netflix’s plans to expand into the video game space, but it appears that the streaming platform is serious. For March, Netflix confirmed that it’s adding at least three more titles, including two that already went live last Tuesday, which are Shatter Remastered, This is a True Story, and Into the Dead 2: Unleashed.
According to its official statement, Shatter Remastered and This is a True Story are out now for iOS and Android users, with Into the Dead 2: Unleashed coming at an unspecified time.
As the name suggests, Shatter Remastered is PikPok’s remaster of Sidhe’s original title from 2009, which includes a global leaderboard where you can compete against other players to see who is the best at breaking bricks. Meanwhile, This is a True Story was developed by Frosty Pop for Charity: Water that tells a true story to help spread the message about how potable water remains a luxury for some people in developing countries around the world. Finally, Into the Dead 2: Unleashed is Netflix’s first-ever FPS title from PikPok.
Despite making little noise about its gaming endeavors, Netflix continues to flesh out its gaming service after its initial foray last year.
In addition to securing more titles, Netflix is also throwing money into buying video game studios that specialize in making mobile games. For example, just days after welcoming its latest games to the platform, Netflix announced on Thursday that it had acquired Boss Fight Entertainment. The Texas-based studio is headed by former Zynga employees and is behind a handful of successful games for smartphones and tablets, including Dungeon Boss. By adding more studios to its repertoire, Netflix is hoping to keep its gaming library free from ads. Unfortunately, Netflix did not confirm when it will include Boss Fight’s games into its selection of titles.
So far, Netflix has acquired three video game companies in Night School Studio, Next Games, and Boss Fight Entertainment, in 7 months.
In other news, Netflix hasn’t exactly endeared itself to users this month. Right around the same time that Disney Plus confirmed its plans for a cheaper subscription, Netflix started cracking down on account sharing just months after raising prices in the United States.
