Mortal Kombat 1 receives backlash from fans over Ermac’s redesign

If NetherRealm Studios doesn't come up with better alternate costumes for Ermac, Mortal Kombat fans won't let them off the hook.

Ermac might not boast the same level of popularity as iconic characters like Scorpion or Sub-Zero, but he certainly has a devoted fan base. Being one of the confirmed characters in the much-awaited Mortal Kombat 1 reboot by NetherRealm Studios, fans have been given a sneak peek at the character, and let’s just say they aren’t exactly thrilled with his design.

At the exciting five-day San Diego Comic-Con event, NetherRealm Studios unveiled the Kombat Pack Roster, which included the rumored superhero trio of Homelander, Omni-Man, and Peacemaker, as well as Takeda, Quan Chi, and Ermac, who were conspicuously absent from Mortal Kombat 11.

However, the excitement quickly waned after fans laid eyes on Ermac’s design, leaving them with mixed emotions about this much-loved character’s new look. Well, to be fair, “mixed” may be a generous term here.

The red-clad ninja with unparalleled telekinesis abilities is easily recognizable by his distinctive design, which features a mask made from black bandages that are wrapped around his head, leaving only his eyes and nostrils visible.

In the new design, Ermac’s face is fully exposed with no visible bandages, revealing his decaying face in full display for the first time. Though a few rare fans have embraced the new simplistic design, the majority have been raging about it, with comical hashtags like #NotMyErmac popping up in online gaming communities.

If we assume that all Ermac alternate costumes will stick with the decayed design without bandages, the only solution for fans to fix this loathsome design is through the gear system that was introduced in Mortal Kombat 11. Similar to Injustice 2, this system allows players to play around with different character cosmetics, like costumes, appearance, and even weapons and abilities.

As of now, Mortal Kombat 1 has not been confirmed to have a gear system, but if it does, we’re certain the first character most players will rush to modify is Ermac – unless Netherrealm pulls a fast one and leaves him without any masks.

Mortal Kombat 1 will arrive on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on September 19.
