Marvel’s Daredevil director sheds light on the scrapped Daughters of the Dragon show

Given Netflix's track record, they likely would have pulled the plug on the Daughters of the Dragon series after just a single season.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a colossal force in the entertainment industry, with its films and TV shows attracting millions of viewers across different mediums. However, not all projects saw the light of day, especially in the Marvel-Netflix partnership. One such project was the spin-off series centered around Colleen Wing and Misty Knight, titled ‘Daughters of the Dragon’.

In the previous decade, Netflix and Marvel TV have collaborated to adapt several comic book characters, including Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. With the exception of The Punisher, these characters were brought together in a crossover event that birthed The Defenders Saga.

Unfortunately, Netflix’s license to these characters eventually expired, giving Disney back ownership of the rights. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, acclaimed Netflix director Marc Jobst revealed that Luke Cage’s Season 2, Episode 3, tilted “Wig Out”, was directed with a Daughters of the Dragon spin-off in mind, stating:

Yes, absolutely. There was some relationship building in the episode, starting with the boxing ring training. That culminated in Colleen deliberately leading Misty into a fight to get over her self-pity, knowing that Misty would rise to it, which she did. The two of them going off into the smoke and bokeh as a definite twosome was a nod to the potential of Daughters of the Dragon.

Back in 2020, Jessica Henwick, who stars as Colleen Wing in Iron Fist, shared her thoughts on the axed spin-off during an interview, saying:

There had been very light discussions about Daughters of the Dragon happening, which I would have loved because working opposite Simone [Missick] was such a dream, and I think she’s so talented and perfect for the role. I do remember some very vague discussions, but you keep your fingers crossed and never know what’s going to happen in this industry.

Colleen Wing and Misty Knight joined forces for the first time in 1977 within the pages of Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #32, and both characters played pivotal roles in the world of Iron Fist. Interestingly, this wasn’t the first attempt to bring the Daughters of the Dragon to television.

Back in 2001, there were whispers of a show centered on Colleen, but sadly, it never came to fruition. Despite the promise and the groundwork set for a Daughters of the Dragon spin-off, the return of the Defenders characters to Disney halted any further development in the Netflix universe.

Simone Missick was the perfect choice to portray Mercedes Kelly “Misty” Knight.

As it stands now, the only characters with a future in the MCU are Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, and Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, all of whom are set to star in the upcoming Daredevil reboot, Daredevil: Born Again. However, the fate of other characters from The Defenders saga remains uncertain.
