Nearly four years after John Wick Hex told us the tale of how the titular assassin became friends with Winston Scott and his ever-loyal concierge, Charon, Lionsgate Entertainment has finally seen the light and wants to delve deeper into the gaming potential of the mostly-cinematic franchise.
Lionsgate, the studio behind the John Wick series, recently revealed in an earnings call that they’re heavily considering the first AAA video game based on the Keanu Reeves-led universe.
Both Lionsgate CEO, Jon Feltheimer, and Lionsgate Chairman, Joseph Drake, hinted at this possibility as they expressed a hype-inducing enthusiasm for the project and acknowledged the exploration of potential pitches.
Feltheimer stated that the company is “fielding proposals” for a AAA game set in the John Wick universe, although specifics are sparse at the moment.
But, as previously mentioned, this won’t be the first John Wick game. John Wick Hex, a strategy-style game with cartoonish visuals by Mike Bithell, is effectively a prequel to the movies. Many fans appreciated its unique approach, especially its link to the cinematic universe. It wasn’t a AAA game by any means, although it could very well have set the foundation for Lionsgate to explore the same universe further.
As Lionsgate aims to create something grander for the gaming fans of John Wick, it’s currently in the middle of a franchise-wise expansion with at least one more mainline installment, a spin-off starring Ana de Armas, and a prequel TV series.
Despite some skepticism among fans due to the poor track record of movie tie-in video games, many are still intrigued by the possibility of a AAA game adding depth to the beloved hitman character and expanding on the lore of the films.
