Kojima Productions Trademarked Physint Ahead of its Release

It's rare for developers to trademark their in-development game's working title but, then again, this is Hideo Kojima we're talking about.

One thing is clear: Physint is a true Hideo Kojima game.

Hideo Kojima, the renowned auteur behind the Metal Gear series, recently made headlines after confirming that he’s making a spiritual successor to the best-selling Konami franchise.

Physint, revealed at the most recent State of Play showcase, is an in-development PlayStation exclusive that will serve as Kojima Productions’ next game following the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.

While many assumed Physint is a working title that will likely be changed, it appears Kojima is thinking otherwise.

The recent trademarking of Physint, made public on February 6, hints at a deliberate strategy by Kojima. Further fueling the intrigue, the word Physint briefly appeared on a sign during the recent State of Play presentation, solidifying its connection to the upcoming title.

While Physint likely remains a placeholder codename, the trademark filing is surprising, to say the least. In any industry, working titles are typically kept internal and their usage in its marketing is rare. Then again, this is Kojima we’re talking about. If anything, this perplexing decision is par for the course for a video game developer known for enigmatic storytelling and audience engagement. Not to mention, if the goal was to get people talking, then Kojima has definitely succeeded.

As for the name itself, Physint is igniting theories and interpretations. Some speculate it’s an abbreviation for “Physical/Physics Intelligence,” potentially reflecting themes of real-world information gathering amidst an age of unreliable digital intel. Others see it as a placeholder eventually replaced by a more evocative title, similar to Death Stranding’s cryptic reveal years ago.

Widely considered as Hideo Kojima's best game, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a remake that will launch to unbelievably high standards.

Beyond the name, questions linger about the game’s nature. While some see it as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Kojima has emphasized creating a new IP, allowing him complete creative freedom and the opportunity to explore fresh ideas within familiar territory.

Release timelines are equally nebulous. Anticipations lean towards a lengthy wait, potentially exceeding three to four years. Kojima himself hinted at a 2026 reveal, coinciding with his 40th anniversary in the industry and the presumed completion of Death Stranding 2.

As Kojima ventures into this new AAA project, comparisons with Konami’s recent endeavors are inevitable, given Kojima’s history with the company. While Konami struggles to captivate audiences with its latest projects, often met with mixed reactions, Kojima continues to push the boundaries of genre and narrative, starting with Death Stranding and now with his return to the stealth genre with Physint and an experimental horror film with OD. now returning to the stealth genre with Physint and exploring horror with OD.

Thus, with Kojima at the helm, Physint is poised to redefine audience expectations, offering its players an experience that blurs the boundaries between interactive entertainment and cinematic storytelling.
