20th Century Studios announced a sequel to 2021’s Vacation Friends and it’s coming to Hulu later this year.
Vacation Friends 2 sees the return of John Cena and friends for what should be another terrible outing. The studio revealed the first-look image of the upcoming movie featuring Cena, Lil Rel Howery, Yvonne Orji, and Meredith Hagner. The film was originally titled Honeymoon Friends before the studio opted to brand it as a sequel.
The second movie is set a few months after the events of Vacation Friends. Newlywed couple Marcus (Howery) and Emily (Orji) invite their best friends Ron (Cena) and Kyla (Hagner), who are also newly married, to join them on vacation as Marcus wins an all-expense paid trip to a Caribbean resort.
The main reason Marcus wants to take a trip is to meet the owners of the resort and bid on a construction contract for the hotel they have in Chicago. Ron and Kyla, on the other hand, take a break after the birth of their baby.
Things get out of control as Kyla’s recently released father Reese (Steve Buscemi) arrives at the resort. Reese, formerly incarcerated at the San Quentin Penitentiary, disrupts Marcus’ plans and turns the trip into a disaster for the group.
Clay Tarver will return to helm the project and serve as its scriptwriter. Todd Garner returns to the buddy comedy alongside Stuart Besser. The star-studded cast will get support from Carlos Santos, Ronny Chieng, and Jamie Hector.
The first film held the record for Hulu’s biggest opening weekend before being dethroned by the debut of Prey. Vacation Friends received mixed reviews from critics and fans with an average score of 49/100 on Metacritic.
While the buddy comedy received middling reviews, critics did praise the cast of the movie. Critics praised the performance of the quartet with Cena and Hagner being mentioned for their natural aptitude for sharp humor.
Cena is having a very busy year as he is set to appear in several movies including Fast X. The pro wrestler turned actor will also be in the Barbie movie as well as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Cena is also returning for the second season of Peacemaker on HBO.
Vacation Friends 2 will be streaming in the United States on Hulu on August 25. The movie will be released in Latin America under Star+ while it will be available for streaming on Disney+ in all other territories.
