Is horse riding coming to Dying Light 2?

So far, we're only a year into the release of Dying Light 2 with Techland promising at least five years worth of content.

Now that you think about it, there aren't too many animals in Dying Light 2.

In Techland’s post-apocalyptic parkour-infused survival horror sequel, Dying Light 2, evidence of an unused yet intriguing gameplay mechanic that players could soon get to experience has been found.

Although the current version doesn’t feature horse riding, a recent leak suggests it could be introduced in a future DLC expansion.

The revelation comes from a curious Reddit user, Ghostspider1989, who was navigating the Dying Light 2 config files with an intention to modify their in-game controls. While perusing the files, they stumbled upon several references linked to a horse riding mechanic. The commands ranged from generic movements like galloping and directional controls to more advanced actions such as increasing max speed and deceleration.

Although Villedor, the walled city where the game takes place, doesn’t offer any interaction with horses, the world does include detailed horse models. This has spurred speculation among fans, who are excited at the prospect of a horse-riding DLC akin to the vehicular zombie-smashing expansion in the original Dying Light game. Many are even fantasizing about a Red Dead Redemption 2 style system where players could form a bond with their horses, making their potential loss all the more poignant.

As part of their long-term content support plan for Dying Light 2, Techland has promised at least five years of DLC. Fans are wondering if horse riding could be one of the additions they’ll see in this period. Given that the first game’s DLC included a new means of transportation, the introduction of horses doesn’t seem far-fetched. Moreover, there’s a shared game engine between Dying Light 2 and Techland’s Call of Juarez series, which prominently featured horse riding.

Nevertheless, these theories remain purely speculative for the time being. While the config file leak has sparked plenty of discussions, there’s no official word from Techland about this cut feature or its potential reintroduction.

The addition of animals in Dying Light 2 could help make its world look more lively.

Dying Light 2’s first DLC expansion, Bloody Ties, was released in November of the previous year. As fans eagerly await the next content update, which is due sometime this year, some believe it might take players to a new locale, potentially featuring the aforementioned equestrian rides.

Dying Light 2’s dynamic open-world gameplay combined with parkour and robust zombie combat have garnered positive reviews since its launch. The game’s continuous post-launch support, which so far includes the Good Night and Good Luck update, and the Gut Feeling update, has added to its appeal. However, whether or not the developers will gallop ahead with the hinted horse transportation remains to be seen.

As for Techland, the developer is in it for the long haul. They’re committed to supporting the game and creating new and engaging content to keep the community invested. Whether that includes horses doing parkour or not, we can be sure to expect some intriguing mechanics to come our way.

Techland is currently working on more content for Dying Light 2 as well as a Nintendo Switch port.

The best-case scenario is that Techland is testing out this new mechanic in Dying Light 2 before refining it for use in its upcoming fantasy RPG title. Of course, it’s worth noting that the in-game files contain animals as well, but Techland never used them for some reason, so this might just be a part of the cut content for the game.

Regardless of whether horses will be in Dying Light 2 or not, the game’s atmospheric and treacherous landscape does more than enough to create a captivating gameplay experience.

Speaking of horses and Red Dead Redemption, it’s believed that Rockstar Games will announce a remaster of the 2010 title next month ahead of its release in November.
