PlayStation’s next batch of free games for the PlayStation Plus has been confirmed and the term “underrated” certainly seems to be a prevailing theme.
The April 2024 PS Plus Essential tier lineup of games are Immortals of Aveum, Minecraft Legends, and Skul: The Hero Slayer.
PS Plus Essential subscribers can claim the three games starting on April 2. In the meantime, the March lineup is still available for redemption.
Immortals of Aveum, the brainchild of Ascendant and Electronic Arts, had an interesting premise “Call of Duty but with magic” and the trailers leading up to the game certainly delivered. But the game flopped hard when it first came out due to a scheduling issue and simply because it was a so-so title.
On any other date, people might have given Immortals of Aveum a pass. However, the last-minute early release of Baldur’s Gate 3 and the launch of Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon with Starfield just two weeks away, made it difficult for Immortals of Aveum to get any attention.
Months later and there’s little reason for PS Plus subscribers not to give the “fantasy shooter”, which currently has a 69% average rating on Metacritic, a shot.
Continuing with the “underrated” theme, Minecraft Legends, a real-time strategy spin-off set in Mojang’s wildly popular survival crafting game, is a breath of fresh air in a usually inaccessible genre. It’s a child-friendly take on the RTS formula that might just eat hours of your time.
Finally, completing the trifecta is arguably the best game of the lineup, Skul: The Hero Slayer. While not ground-breaking by any means, this indie 2D platformer rogue-lite reverses the “man vs monster” trope by having you play as the last Skul, a demon, who must now save his king from the clutches of the evil human beings. If the premise doesn’t draw you in, then maybe the 80% average rating on Metacritic will.
Aside from the April PS Plus Essential lineup, PlayStation 5 owners have plenty to look forward to in the coming months, starting with Stellar Blade.
Following an earlier leak into its NSFW costumes, Stellar Blade is getting a demo on March 29 ahead of its release on PlayStation 5 on April 26.
