Cue some somber music and dim the lights, because it seems the Deadites have finally won a round. Developer Saber Interactive has just dropped a bombshell that will dishearten fans of Evil Dead: The Game who are expecting more spine-chilling content. The game, it seems, is dead.

In a statement shared via the company’s official Twitter account, Saber Interactive announced its decision to halt the development of new content for Evil Dead: The Game. If that wasn’t enough of a gut punch, the Nintendo Switch version, which many were eagerly anticipating, has also been axed.

Here’s the full statement:

To the Evil Dead: The Game community,

Today, we have made the decision not to pursue the development of new content for Evil Dead: The Game. We also confirm that we will not be releasing a Nintendo Switch version of the game.

We will keep the servers up for the foreseeable future and address any major issues that arise.

On behalf of the entire team at Saber, thank you for all the groovy times and your continued support.

Launched in 2022, Evil Dead: The Game is an action-packed, multiplayer game inspired by the horror franchise created by legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi. Players can team up as iconic characters from the Evil Dead universe, including Ash Williams, to face the relentless forces of the Deadites.

The game offers both co-op and PvP modes, where players can either work together to complete objectives and survive against the evil forces or take on the role of the Kandarian Demon to hunt Ash and his friends.

Following the game’s debut, Saber Interactive released updates that introduced characters from the 2013 film, including David and Mia Allen, and the Castle Kandar map, a nod to the 1992 classic, Army of Darkness. Yet, despite the franchise’s return to theaters with Evil Dead Rise, the game’s content updates have been eerily silent.

So, what went wrong? One might speculate that the game’s player base dwindled faster than Ash’s patience with Deadites. Recent stats from platforms like Steam Charts paint a grim picture, with player counts five feet under. It’s always a challenge for multiplayer titles to maintain a steady player base, and it seems Evil Dead: The Game couldn’t escape this curse.

Fortunately, it’s not all doom and gloom. The fact that Saber Interactive has committed to keeping the servers alive “for the foreseeable future” means fans can still team up and take on the Deadite horde. While the game might not have lived up to the legacy of its cinematic counterparts, it still offered a reasonably entertaining experience for fans of the horror genre.

The gaming industry is no stranger to such developments. Games come and go, some leaving an indelible mark while others fade into obscurity. For now, fans of Evil Dead: The Game will have to find solace in the memories of their battles against the undead and hope that the franchise returns in another form in the future.

Evil Dead: The Game is available to play on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.
