On Tuesday, fans bid farewell to Ahsoka, the latest show set in the ever-expansive Star Wars franchise and a spin-off of The Mandalorian series. Even though the finale received flak from critics and audiences for how it ended, it was still a massive success for Disney.
In terms of viewers, the show’s debut episode attracted the most eyes ever to the company’s streaming platform in its first week. Furthermore, it enjoyed a critics approval rating of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. With its performance, we would think that a second season is a no-brainer. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any mention of one – until now.
Deadline has provided us with a glimmer of hope with a recent report that Disney has plans for another installment of the Rosario Dawson-led series. The magazine wrote, “We hear that Ahsoka Season 2 is more of a reality in the conversation, though nothing is locked yet.”
The events of Star Wars: Ahsoka pick up after the 1983 film, Return of the Jedi. It follows the Jedi Ahsoka Tano as she fights to ensure that the threat of the empire is forever stamped out following its fall.
We first met Ahsoka in the Disney animated series, Star Wars: Clone Wars, which aired from 2008 to 2020. The brash as well as headstrong former Padawan of Anakin Skywalker then appears, both in animated and live-action form, in Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian, and The Book of Bobba Fett. Dawson gave life to the character and quickly became a fan favorite. When news came that Disney had greenlit a show with the character as the lead, many received it with joy.
With the season finale’s tantalizing conclusion, it’s clear that Dave Filoni has a lot of stories up his sleeves. The ending left us on the edge, with Ahsoka herself marooned in another galaxy alongside her co-adventurer, Sabine Wren.
With the recent strikes that rocked Hollywood, the show isn’t expected to come out soon. Fortunately, the WGA strike is over and work can begin in earnest on a script for the show. The studio can also do some legwork on the actors they need so they can do their best to snap them up immediately after SAG-AFTRA calls off its strike.
The Star Wars universe is a fun and exciting one and Ahsoka is a spitting example of it. Fortunately, there are other Star Wars shows on the way that will showcase more of the world, including Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte.
For those who missed out, the first season of Ahsoka is currently streaming on Disney+.
