The developers personally tested the difficulty of bosses in Remnant 2

And, oh, if you're wondering why the bosses in Remnant 2 are so good and challenging, it's because the developers tested them out personally.

Playtesters are one thing but when the developers themselves are the ones testing out a game's mechanics, you get a game that turns a lot of heads like Remnant 2.

The universe of Remnant 2 is dark, gripping, and teeming with intricately designed bosses that challenge the prowess of every player. What’s fascinating is the measure the development team at Gunfire Games went to in ensuring the bosses were demanding enough. The metric used by the team? The no-hit run. If a designer could beat a boss on the first try, it was deemed too simple. Such a standard sets the game’s experience apart, making it uniquely thrilling for players.

Shaun Brahmsteadt II, the Principal Environment Artist at Gunfire Games, recently spoke about the meticulous approach in a chat with eXputer. He mentioned that the bosses that nearly eluded defeat but weren’t entirely invincible were deemed the most successful.

Such measures might remind you of similar instances in Final Fantasy 14 and Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. But, in Remnant 2, the no-hit run standard was a genuine touch, seamlessly blending challenge with a feel of realism.

The fact that we’re even talking about Remnant 2 when Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty just came out speaks volumes about how much of an impact it made.

The authenticity of the gameplay is rooted in the developers’ love for the “soulslike” genre. Games such as  Bloodborne, Dark Souls, and Elden Ring rank high among the favorites of the majority of the Gunfire Games team. Shaun explained the studio’s philosophy when he mentioned that Gunfire aims to make titles that they themselves would be eager to go ahead and play. It’s clear from Remnant 2 that they love challenges, both in playing and in crafting games.

This philosophy isn’t merely theoretical. It’s woven into the very fabric of Remnant 2, challenging players to strategically manage resources like stamina. Instead of allowing players to swing their weapons indefinitely or dodge attacks ceaselessly, the game forces them to strategize, retreat, and occasionally back off to regroup.

Perhaps it’s this added layer of passion and love for gaming that’s led to Remnant 2 punching well above its weight. At launch, the soulslike-shooter vaulted past Baldur’s Gate 3 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on Steam, even going as far as to outsell Diablo 4 in certain regions.

At this point, a third Remnant game is all but guaranteed but that won’t happen for a couple of years because the developers have bigger things planned for the game.

If there’s ever a game that “smaller” studios should want to emulate, it’s Remnant 2 – it’s the unofficial poster child for AA games.

But, while most would think that this is it for Remnant 2, Shaungave an intriguing hint by revealing that three DLCs are already in the pipeline. While he stopped short of providing intricate details, his excitement for the upcoming content was evident. This revelation should undoubtedly whet the appetite of players, especially those already charmed by the depth and creativity of the current game. The worlds within Remnant 2 might be foreboding and eerily silent, but they brim with content waiting to be explored. It’s clear that the game is not just an evocative experience for players, but also a passion project for its developers.

All the relevant numbers say that Remnant 2 is a huge success.

For now, the future looks promising for Remnant 2 and its community of players. With a thriving present and a series of content-packed expansions on the horizon, players have a lot to look forward to. And while Shaun emphasized that the studio is concentrating on supporting Remnant 2 for the time being, the question remains: Will there be a sequel? Only time will tell. But for now, the dark, intricate universe of Remnant 2 offers ample explorations, challenges, and mysteries for every player.
